Elections are always a difficult time, but this election season has been especially hard for many. As we approach election day, consider some of these tips for coping with election stress.

1. Focus on what you can control & what positive actions you can take.
2. Separate people from their viewpoints, especially close family & friends.
3. Stay mindful. Before engaging in discussion, know your goal. Acknowledge your worries & fears.
4. Set Boundaries. Limit exposure from social media. Take mental & conversation breaks from politics.
5. Beware of disinformation. Educate yourself about the facts and their sources.
6. Remember the Golden Rule. Remain civil and refrain from name calling.
7. Stay Curious. We can still learn from others even if we don’t agree with them.
8. Seek counseling if you need a space to process thoughts and feelings. CAPS is here to support you. It is okay to reach out for help if you are struggling to cope with the election.

Use a planner- Map out your week and be sure to include eating, self-care, and breaks when scheduling your day.

🌟  Meet our incredible graduate student intern, Joe! 🌟

Counseling Connections:
I am one of two clinical interns at CAPS. As an intern, I assist the staff to offer counseling services to my fellow students. You might encounter me at the CAPS office in the H&K Building most days of the week. Stop by the office sometime!

What is your favorite season and why?
Honestly, if I had to pick one season to be my favorite, I’d have to pick two. I really love autumn and spring. I love both equally. In autumn, you get the perfect days and all of nature’s bounty before everything goes dormant, and then in spring, everything bursts alive—it’s almost electric! The choice is too difficult!

Fun fact about me:
One fun fact about me is that I have a deathly fear of heights. In fact, while thinking about it now, my palms are beginning to sweat. Despite my fears, a dear friend convinced me to skydive once. It was equal parts terrifying and enlivening.

🌟  Meet our incredible graduate student intern, Aelyn! 🌟

Counseling Connections:
I’m a Counseling Intern with CAPS Fall 2024-Spring 2025, planning to graduate May 2025. I participate in research on projects with professors as well as independent research, and love to enjoy the library and walking around campus. You may see me in Roskens Hall or with CAPS at various groups and events in the community and on campus!

How do you manage stress?
I love to be creative to let off stress–baking, decorating cakes, and crafts are some of my favorite ways to challenge myself but remind myself I’m capable. I am often experimenting with new recipes to perfect them, and thinking about dabbling in the bread scene.

What is your favorite season and why?
Fall is my favorite season because it’s cool enough to drink hot coffee on my walks with my dog and enjoy evenings working through my reading list. I’m also a big Husker football fan (sorry, Durango), and every fall means there’s another chance for this to “be our year.”
