The Science of Self-talk!
Did you know that almost everyone has an inner voice? Research suggests more than 80% of people report hearing an internal dialogue throughout their day. That voice shapes how we interpret the world, how we motivate ourselves, and how we recover from mistakes.
But here’s the fascinating part: your brain doesn’t just listen to your self-talk, it changes is neuroconnections because of it. Every repeated thought fires a cluster of neurons together. The more they fire, the stronger that connection becomes. Over time, your brain builds a “path” that makes those thoughts easier to access.
That’s neuroplasticity — your brain’s ability to rewire itself based on experience.
When your inner dialogue leans negative (“I can’t handle this,” “I always mess up”), your brain strengthens those pathways. But when you practice intentional self-compassion (“This is hard, but I’m learning,” “I can get through this one step at a time”), you’re creating new ones.
Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every time you interrupt a critical thought and replace it with a kind one, you’re literally teaching your brain a new route. Over time, that new route becomes your default — the voice that supports you instead of tearing you down.
At Becker Counseling Services, our therapists help clients identify old neural patterns, challenge unhelpful self-talk, and practice new ways of thinking that align with healing and growth.
