Women in Sports: The Power of Title IX ๐
Womenโs History Month is a time to celebrate the progress women have made โ including in athletics.
One major reason womenโs sports have grown so dramatically in the United States is Title IX, a landmark law passed in 1972. Title IX requires schools and educational programs that receive federal funding to provide equal opportunities regardless of s*x, including equal access to athletics.
Before Title IX, opportunities for girls and women in sports were extremely limited. Today, millions of girls participate in school athletics โ building confidence, leadership skills, and pathways to college and professional sports.
The impact of that progress can be seen on the world stage. At the 2026 Winter Olympics, American women brought home more gold medals than their male counterparts โ a powerful example of what happens when women are given equal opportunities to compete.
However, we also recognize that the fight for inclusion in sports continues. Recently proposed legislation that prevents transgender athletes from participating in school sports is deeply concerning. Transgender girls and women deserve the same opportunity to participate, learn teamwork, build confidence, and experience the benefits of athletics as their peers.
At The Pride Initiative and Pride Health Clinic, we believe sports should be about participation, opportunity, and community. We stand for inclusive opportunities in athletics for all women, including transgender women and girls.
Because when we expand opportunity, everyone wins. ๐
