If you have switched primary veterinarians for any reason, please let me know! I operate under a referral from your primary veterinarian in compliance with Nebraska laws and regulations. If you need help obtaining a new referral form, I am happy to help!
In addition, if you no longer have an active veterinary client-patient relationship with your veterinarian, your referral is no longer active. Please ensure your relationship with your vet is active and keep me updated with any changes so we can continue your pet's treatment!

Why are animals so sleepy after an adjustment? 😴
There are two major players in the nervous system: parasympathetic and sympathetic. In basic terms, the parasympathetic functions are Rest & Digest. 😌 The sympathetic functions are Fight or Flight. 😱 If one is turned on, the other is turned off and vice versa. Both systems complement each other and perform necessary functions in the body, but when there is pain or fear, the sympathetics are activated. Many times in these situations, animals get “stuck” in sympathetic and can’t switch to parasympathetic. 😱
The chiropractic adjustment activates the parasympathetic system, often leading to sleepiness. 😌💤 Regular adjustments help the body manage the entire nervous system and be able to switch easily between parasympathetic and sympathetic.

How did I come to do what I do?
Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to work with animals. Specifically horses. Originally, I thought I should be a horse trainer, but thankfully realized early on I do not have the patience or mental aptitude for that profession. My next thought was veterinarian, which excited me as I would be able to HELP horses! Then I watched my horse get tubed and started sobbing and almost passed out watching a dog get castrated. Alas, the veterinary profession was clearly not for me. Enter Dr. Zink. He came out to adjust my horse Tequilla (featured here) while I was in high school and I was FASCINATED. He knew I was interested in the profession and took an hour explaining what he was doing, having me feel things, and watching before and after gait. I had next to no idea what he was talking about/doing, but I could see the results in Tequilla so I started seeing a chiropractor myself. Horses and riders mirror the same issues and turns out Tequilla and I both had major restrictions on the left side. I saw relief from daily headaches and was able to ride easier. Over the years, chiropractic has kept us well and healed both of us from a variety of ailments.

Through my undergraduate and professional degrees, I developed a passion for working with all species. I really love working on any spine, so if you have a horse, dog, cat, pig, goat, chicken, llama, cow, guinea pig, goose, rabbit, mongoose, platypus, emu, ferret, etc who needs chiropractic care, I am EXCITED to help!

We covered the differences, but how is animal chiropractic SIMILAR to human chiropractic??

🔹Regardless of the species being treated, the concept of chiropractic is the same: Restoring joint motion —> restores nerve communication —> allows the body to heal.

🔹The actual adjustment is also similar for all species:
A high-velocity, low amplitude thrust delivered to an area of joint restriction. The amount of force of course varies by species, patient size, and tolerance.

🔹The conditions treated are honestly pretty similar! Animals can’t talk to us, but they also suffer from back pain, headaches, neck pain, pulled muscles, etc. The diagnosis names might differ (arthritis or disc herniation vs IVDD or spondylosis), but the symptoms and causes are usually similar.

🔹Wellness care is the ultimate use of chiropractic for any species!

The Symptom-care model vs Wellness care model

When you think about going to the doctor, most think about waiting until they are sick or have a SYMPTOM. That model is how traditional western medicine functions. The problem with that model in animals is the SYMPTOM is usually the LAST thing to appear. In most cases, dysfunction is present BEFORE the symptoms arise. Especially considering all animals are prey to something else, they are very good at hiding any symptoms so they don’t appear weak or injured. By the time an animal is showing symptoms, they are at the point they can no longer disguise their pain. Dysfunction was present long before the symptoms started.

A WELLNESS care model of healthcare on the other hand, is a PREVENTATIVE care model. The goal is to find and correct dysfunction early before it progresses to symptoms. This is why I stress wellness and maintenance care. We can identify any problem areas (areas of dysfunction) and correct them to maintain the highest level of function possible.

As one of my fellow chiropractors says, we always check NOSE TO TOES! Why?
Because chiropractic looks at how each piece affects the whole: removing interference throughout the body so optimal healing can be achieved.

People typically ask, “What was the issue?” Or, “What caused the problem?” Many times, I can give a pretty accurate guess, but that’s not really my goal. Everything in the body is connected to everything else, meaning it can have an effect anywhere. (Remember the bone song?? The foot bone’s connected to the… ankle bone! The ankle bone’s connected to the… leg bone! You get the picture). My goal isn’t to necessarily pinpoint the exact cause of the issue, but to ensure everything is moving properly so everything is functioning and the body can heal.

“How often will my pet need to be seen?”
Ah… my favorite question… and the answer is usually, “it depends.” I can typically give you a general layout or estimate prior to the initial visit, but many factors go into a treatment plan for your pet, including:

🔹Age
🔹Breed
🔹 Presenting complaint
🔹 Severity of symptoms
🔹 Conformation
🔹 Discipline
🔹 Past medical history and any surgeries
🔹 My experience treating
🔹 Current research
🔹 How your animal is responding to treatment
🔹 YOUR GOALS FOR TREATMENT

No two animals are the same, so no two treatment plans are the same. In the same way, no two people’s situations, schedules, or priorities are the same. My recommendation will always be what is best for your animal. I will always advocate for what will be the most effective to achieve or maintain the results you’re looking for. But if my recommendation doesn’t work for you, any amount of chiropractic care is better than no chiropractic care!

As we move into a new year, we tend to focus on goals and how we want the next year to look. Who hasn’t set a New Year’s resolution at some point in their life? I’m no exception. However, I tend to set specific goals AND overarching themes or foci for those goals. In 2026, my focus is on education!

Let’s be real - you can search “animal chiropractor” on any social media site and be inundated with a plethora of videos of chiropractors adjusting animals. While it’s entertaining (I enjoy it too!), I want to focus my platform on the WHY, the HOW, and the RESULTS.

Every time I tell someone what I do, the response is, “I didn’t know that was a thing!” I can count on one hand the number of times I have not received that response and I’ve been an animal chiropractor over 5 years. While each of those interactions is an opportunity to educate, it’s a stark reminder of how little the public knows about animal chiropractic. I aim to change that.

Send me your questions, concerns, “I saw this,” “I read that,” fun facts you saw. Your, “can a chiropractor help with _____” questions. I love teaching and the education side of being a doctor of chiropractic, so this year is all about what you want to know! (And honestly probably way more than you want to know, but I get really excited about chiropractic and am a huge nerd).

I’m looking forward to continuing to serve YOU in 2026!

Merry Christmas!! I hope you all have an incredible, relaxing, and joy-filled holiday season.
