Wellness Wednesday: Building Balance & Why It Matters for Kids’ Development

Balance is a key part of a child’s development, and it’s more than just standing or walking. Pediatric physical therapists focus on helping kids build coordination, body awareness, and core strength, which are essential for everyday activities like running, jumping, climbing, and playing sports.

Developing balance early also supports injury prevention, confidence, and overall motor skills, setting the foundation for a lifetime of safe, active movement.

✂️ Why Scissor Skills Matter ✂️

Scissor use develops:
🤚Fine motor strength – strengthens the small hand muscles needed for handwriting, dressing, and using utensils.
👀Hand-eye coordination – helps kids use their eyes and hands together for daily tasks.
✋🤚Bilateral coordination – teaches both hands to work together, like holding paper with one hand and cutting with the other.
🧠Focus and attention – encourages concentration and patience as kids follow lines and shapes.

These foundational skills support school readiness and independence in everyday routines.

Occupational Therapists often introduce scissor tasks gradually starting with ripping paper or cutting play dough before moving on to lines and shapes. Learn more about how occupational therapy can help your child by visiting www.procare3.com
