Jessica Goodman, PT, DPT, PhD, assistant professor in Creighton’s Phoenix Department of Physical Therapy, is putting human-centered design into action to improve patient care.
After completing the Leading Change through Human-Centered Design course, Dr. Goodman applied what she learned to a fall prevention initiative at St. Vincent de Paul’s Virginia G. Piper Medical Clinic in Phoenix, which serves uninsured and underinsured patients.

Through interviews, observation and collaboration with stakeholders, the project focused on understanding the real-life challenges patients and providers face—leading to more practical and sustainable solutions for fall-risk reduction.

Her work demonstrates how thoughtful design and community collaboration can lead to meaningful healthcare innovation.

Many healthcare innovations fail not because the ideas are wrong, but because the people affected by them were not part of the process.

Creighton’s Leading Change through Human-Centered Design course introduces professionals to a collaborative approach that begins with listening, observation and engagement.

Participants bring real challenges from their own workplace to the program and use human-centered design methods to develop solutions that better serve patients, providers and communities.

Discover how this approach is helping healthcare professionals rethink innovation.

Our first-year Omaha Occupational Therapy students recently had a great time in their sensory lab class!

During the session, students practiced hands-on techniques used to support individuals with mental health challenges and disabilities. Activities included therapeutic drumming, exploring sensory toys and creating clay tokens—methods that can help promote regulation, engagement and emotional well-being.

Experiences like this allow students to build practical skills they will use in future clinical practice.

Last week, we proudly celebrated the induction of new members into Pi Theta Epsilon (PTE), the national honor society for occupational therapy students and practitioners, across all four of Creighton University’s OT pathways!

Ceremonies were held on each campus, recognizing students who demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to research and evidence-based practice and a heart for service.

It was especially meaningful to see our PTE community represented in Omaha, Phoenix, Regis (Denver) and Anchorage, reflecting the strength, connection and shared purpose of Creighton OT across all locations.

We look forward to your contributions to scholarship, leadership and the profession of Occupational Therapy!

“My time at the Magis Clinic has been a defining chapter in my journey. Witnessing the barriers our patients face while navigating their health, and actively supporting a Care Team in addressing those needs, gave me the absolute certainty that I am exactly where I am meant to be.”

For Javier Rodriguez Avila, PharmD’29, experiences like serving at the Hispanic Health Fair at OneWorld reinforced that healthcare is about more than prescriptions, it’s about standing in solidarity with those most affected by injustice.

As a future pharmacist, Javier is committed to community outreach, advocacy and ensuring every patient feels supported and seen. Because true success in healthcare isn’t just measured in outcomes, it’s measured in the difference we make when we stand with others.
