Phoenix students Breanna Hanley, Megan Iammarino and Micah Paredes are working closely with Omaha-based faculty mentor Kevin Fuji, PharmD, on a two-year research project focused on how electronic health records (EHRs) support pharmacists in different practice settings.

Throughout the project, Dr. Fuji has guided the team through survey development, data collection, literature review and analysis, helping them stay engaged in a long-term research process and strengthening how they approach complex questions over time.

The students describe how mentorship has helped them think more carefully about how survey questions are written and how data is interpreted, while also learning to work through challenges as a team.

Dr. Fuji adds that he has been impressed by the team’s ability to function as a cohesive unit while maintaining their individual perspectives and strengths.

This collaboration highlights how mentorship connects students across Creighton’s Omaha and Phoenix campuses in meaningful research work.

Caitlin Lightle, a medical student at Creighton’s School of Medicine, is exploring how research can directly improve patient care. Under the guidance of PT faculty member Abbis Jaffri, PT, MS, PhD, she’s developed skills in study design, data analysis and critical thinking while leading a systematic review on blood flow restriction therapy for chronic ankle instability.

“Working with Dr. Jaffri has helped me gain confidence, think independently and see how research fits into medicine as a whole.”

Dr. Jaffri adds, “Caitlin’s curiosity, work ethic and critical thinking have impressed me from the start. Her contributions elevate the quality of our research and inspire her peers.”

Her work has already been recognized with a Sigma Xi Award of Merit, and she’s mentoring other students to pursue evidence-based, patient-centered research.

Creighton Pharmacy alum Mike Schweitzer recently returned to campus as a guest speaker, sharing insights with students and faculty on the evolving role of community pharmacy practice. 💊

In his rural community of Bedford, Iowa, Mike described how a new regulatory “standard of care” model is expanding what pharmacists can do in patient care. This includes diagnosing conditions, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting lab tests and managing chronic disease care—allowing pharmacists to practice more fully within their education and training.

Mike emphasized the unique impact of rural community pharmacy, where pharmacists are often the most accessible healthcare providers and can make immediate, meaningful differences in patient outcomes.

He also reflected on returning to Creighton, sharing that it was meaningful to highlight the opportunities in pharmacy practice and the importance of lifelong learning and service to others.

We are grateful for alumni like Mike who continue to advance the profession and inspire current students!
