ABA does not happen in a vacuum. Skills are built through collaboration, consistency, and support across settings, not just during therapy sessions. Make sure to talk to your child's BCBA about caregiver guidance!

✨ Representation matters, especially in play ✨

Barbie recently took a meaningful step forward with the release of the first autistic Barbie, created in partnership with autistic advocates and designed to reflect some of the ways autistic kids experience the world. From sensory friendly accessories to communication supports, this doll helps children see themselves reflected in their toys.

Research consistently shows that representation in play has real benefits. Studies on identity and play have found that children who see themselves represented in dolls and characters show higher self esteem, stronger self identity, and a greater sense of belonging. For autistic children, who often report feeling misunderstood or excluded, seeing themselves positively represented can be especially powerful.

This is not just about a doll. It is about sending a message that autistic kids are valued, understood, and worthy of being seen exactly as they are.

🚨 Important for Nebraska families 🚨

Proposed Medicaid changes could limit access to medically necessary ABA services for children with autism. These changes may restrict who qualifies and cap therapy hours, regardless of individual need.

Myth Busting Monday 🐝

Myth: ABA is about forcing children to act “normal” or suppress natural behaviors.
Fact: Ethical ABA focuses on supporting autonomy, safety, communication, and quality of life, not changing who a child is.

There is nothing wrong with being autistic or neurodivergent. Many children are navigating a world that was not designed with their needs in mind. Support should meet them where they are, honor who they are, and help them build skills that make daily life easier and more meaningful.

This holiday season, we wanted to give our team something meaningful.

A small reminder of the values that guide our work every day: compassion, collaboration, curiosity, accountability, and being results driven.

These values are at the heart of Behaven and at the heart of the incredible people who make what we do possible.

We are so grateful for our team and the care they bring to kids and families all year long.

Myth Busting Monday

Myth: “My child can’t have autism. He’s too smart.”
Fact: Autism has nothing to do with intelligence.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, not an intellectual limitation. Many autistic children are highly intelligent, verbally advanced, academically gifted, or have exceptional memory, creativity, or problem-solving skills.

What autism does affect can include:
Social communication
Sensory processing
Emotional regulation
Flexibility with change
How a child interacts with the world

Some autistic children may struggle academically. Others may be ahead of their peers. Many are both, depending on the area.

Being smart does not rule out autism.
Being autistic does not mean a child is less capable.

Myth Busting Monday 🐝

Myth: ABA tries to change who kids are.
Truth: Ethical ABA supports children in being more independent, safe, and confident while honoring who they already are.

At Behaven Kids, our approach is rooted in autonomy, assent, and meaningful skill-building. Therapy should never erase a child’s personality. It should support their ability to navigate the world in ways that work for them.

Swipe to see how this shows up in practice through our Tips & Responses.
