As he continues his first year of medical school, Drew Balster is being intentional about where he gives his time and energy at Creighton University. 🩺

This semester, Drew is prioritizing deeper relationships with classmates, recognizing how important it is to lean on one another during challenging moments and to offer that same support in return. Whether in class, at student events or during intramural sports, connection has become central to his experience.

Outside of coursework, Drew is also making time for activities that help him stay balanced, including reading and staying active. He has chosen to focus his involvement more intentionally as an officer with the Magis Clinic, allowing him to give his best effort while staying grounded in his purpose.

For Drew, magis is about caring for the whole person including yourself so you can continue learning, growing and showing up fully for others. 💙

A Creighton University researcher has helped change the future of newborn care nationwide.

Through decades of translational research, collaboration and advocacy, Amy Brower, MD, research professor and senior scholar in Creighton’s Institute for Population Health and assistant dean of research for the School of Medicine, contributed critical evidence that led to the addition of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) to the federal Recommended Uniform Screening Panel.

This milestone paves the way for universal newborn screening of a rare, life-limiting genetic condition and underscores the power of research to shape national health policy.

Dr. Brower’s work exemplifies Creighton’s mission to translate rigorous science into meaningful, real-world impact—and to advance population health through compassionate, evidence-based care.

In the fall 2025 semester, M2 Grace Driewer moved closer to her goal of becoming a compassionate, faith-guided physician. While many early medical students grow tired of waiting for third-year clinic work, Grace used this time to serve others and practice helping in new ways.

Through the Medics for Mercy Club, Grace and other medical students helped people who were unhoused move into new apartments. “Simple things like setting up furniture and a TV help to remind them of their worth and the quality of life that they deserve,” she says.

In the classroom, the Physician’s Vocation Program elective course helped her integrate her faith into medicine, and overcoming a challenging block on the renal system renewed her sense of wonder at the body’s interconnected systems and the joy of learning.

In all, it’s the care for her whole person outside of medicine that grounds her as a future physician, including maintaining strong connections with friends and family and training for a marathon and first ever half ironman.

Waddah Al-Refaie, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Surgery in our School of Medicine and at CHI Health, spoke with the Omaha World-Herald about how the School of Medicine is using a $2.4M state grant to improve access to surgical cancer care in rural communities.

Dr. Al-Refaie explains how the six-year initiative integrates research, workforce development, technology, and attention to social determinants of health to close persistent gaps in rural cancer care.

He also highlights national partnerships with the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery to develop scalable solutions with impact in Nebraska and beyond.

The project includes three connected programs aimed at closing gaps in care through research, workforce development and technology.
