Erum Azhar, MD, program director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Creighton University East Valley, and Phoenix medical student Abigail Nielson are working together to examine disparities in severe maternal morbidity among American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
Using quality improvement methodologies like statistical process control and Shewhart charts, their research identifies patterns over time and highlights where change is needed.
“I was impressed by Abigail's profound commitment, dedication and enthusiasm throughout the research endeavor,” Azhar says. “Her work distinguishes itself not only for its superior quality but also for its significant and meaningful impact.”
For Abigail, the experience helped her understand how data can inform more equitable, patient-centered care.
Their next phase will focus on identifying key risk factors and collaborating with communities to develop culturally responsive interventions—ensuring the research leads to meaningful, lasting impact.
