Proprioception is the ability to sense how your body moves in it’s environment; it senses your body’s position and how it moves in the space it’s in. It works with constant feedback loops through sensory fibers located in your muscles, tendons and joints to help with balance, coordination and stability (motor fibers). When you have an instability of musculature caused from poor posture/form, repetitive movements or positions, it trains the brain to hold the musculature in such a position that it can cause subluxations of the joint positions. That’s not to say the joint itself is always malpositioned but the nerves sense that there is a imbalance which can hinder your balance and smooth coordinated movements. When the sense of velocity, force, or direction is changed in the body, there is a greater propensity for injury, falls, and other accidents. Proprioceptive training along with Chiropractic is paramount to maintaining the stability and integrity of the musculoskeletal system for lasting results and graceful aging. Give us a call to see how we can improve your balance and coordination.

Breathing is the most important skill to learn and yes, it is a skill that gets lost through unhealthy lifestyles, stressors, and environmental pollutants. It is taught to those who need strong core breathing such as singers, wind instrument musicians, high level athletes, and martial artists, just to name a few. Through stress and other factors, we release cortisol from our adrenal glands which triggers our sympathetic nervous system to engage when it’s not supposed to. This system is our “fight or flight” mechanism to help us flee danger. When activated, we use our accessory muscles above and beyond our normal need in order to recieve more oxygen into the lungs and thus our tissues to flee danger. When constantly stimulated, we use these accessory muscles even when we’re at rest which can cause a host of issues stemming from headaches, neck/shoulder pain all the way to kidney and adrenal fatigue that will wreak havoc on our endocrine system causing issues with our hormones. Quiet breathing should only be executed by two muscles (diaphragm/ext intercostals) and by learning this skill, you can turn off your sympathetic nervous system in order to return to a baseline of relaxation and stress relief. This is just one of the many puzzle pieces that we can teach you in order to improve your life and longevity. Give us a call to see how we can help manage your stress to achieve optimal performance of your body.

Musculoskeletal pain is almost non-existent in indigenous cultures for many reasons. Societal working norms, inflammatory diets, and environmental stressors are just a few examples that are prevalent in our modern day society. Another major reason for first world joint and muscular pain is the fact that we are always wearing shoes. Our structure and so our stability begin in our feet and by wearing footwear constantly, you may as well be putting casts on your feet because shoes inhibit all of the major intrinsic musculature in your feet that help keep our posture strong and balanced. Not only do we wear footwear but have different shoes for different occasions which is constantly offsetting the way we walk and therefore move. These kinetic changes make our bodies very unstable. These movements cause compensatory muscular changes of our knees, hips, pelvis and back which ultimately cause instability and pain. Start kicking those shoes off when you can! Walking with bare feet will help to reengage the important neuromuscular circuits in your feet to help prevent long lasting issues. Give us a call for an appointment to see how we can strengthen your feet, reengage your neurology, and balance your body in order to maintain long lasting stability.

We’ve all taken breaks at work and “stretched” our backs. This is sometimes automatic and sometimes intentional but is always a motor response from our bodies telling us what it needs. The “stretching” that we think we’re performing is actually an activation of your back musculature. During activation, your muscles will shorten, while a stretch will lengthen your muscles; so we are actually stretching the front of our bodies while we are activating the back muscles. This is because we’ve been in a forward flexed position and the brain is responding to a stretch response in order to shorten the muscles in your back in order to maintain a neutral position to keep us upright and to prevent overstretched musculature in our backs and potential injury. Keeping your back musculature strong is very important in maintaining pain free activities of daily living; especially in a world of constant flexion. Give us a call to make an appointment so we can better show you how to maintain your posture in a safe and effective manner.
