A barrier doesn’t have to become a stopping point.

New funding from the Bedford Falls Foundation is helping Creighton University College of Nursing students stay on track when unexpected financial hardship threatens their education.

Faculty and student success leaders are already seeing the impact. With accessible, no-barrier support, students can focus on what matters most: progressing through their program and preparing to serve patients and communities.

At a time when the need for nurses continues to grow, this kind of investment does more than support individual students—it strengthens the future of the workforce.

Spring break looked a little different this year. 💙

Kaya Pettit, a sophomore nursing student, spent her week in Clinton, Iowa, with the L’Arche community, where she built meaningful relationships, shared laughter and experienced what it truly means to be present with others.

From karaoke nights to shared meals, the most meaningful moments weren’t about “doing,” but about “being”, walking in solidarity and recognizing the dignity and joy in every person.

Kaya shared, “…this experience allowed me to focus more on presence, relationships and learning from the people I was with. It reminded me that meaningful care comes from connection and shared experience.”

Research is fueled by partnership—and at Creighton, that partnership leads to real impact.

For nursing student Ella Trendel, working with Meghan Potthoff, PhD, APRN-NP, meant she could turn a passion for rural healthcare into research that matters.

Together, they explored how rural providers experience caring for acutely ill pediatric patients and how factors like resources, environment and access to care shape clinical decision-making.

“Simple clinical questions can turn into meaningful research,” Ella shared. “This experience showed me how research connects directly to improving patient outcomes.”

Through mentorship, Ella gained hands-on experience designing a qualitative study, navigating the IRB process and thinking critically about real-world challenges in rural care.

Their work helps bring forward the voices of rural providers—informing training, strengthening pediatric readiness and improving care for underserved communities.
