This week, Madonna welcomed 34 students from the Benedictine College School of Nursing for a three-day immersive experience. The students had the opportunity to learn from Madonna’s on-site educators, observe leading-edge rehabilitation practices, and participate in celebrating a shared Benedictine heritage.

As part of a new partnership with Benedictine College, students are eligible for renewable scholarships with a work commitment to Madonna. Together, we look forward to continuing St. Benedict’s mission of caring for the sick above all else.

“Welcoming the Benedictine nursing students was a privilege,” said Terasa Farlin, Madonna vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer. “This experience went beyond clinical learning; it was a shared journey grounded in our Benedictine values. Through mentorship, collaboration and compassionate care, we saw future nurses grow in purpose and reignite their passion for the healing profession.”

From learning to walk again to finishing a triathlon—what a journey!

When Owen Hepp came to Madonna for inpatient rehab less than a year ago, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever walk again. Thanks to the dedication, encouragement and expertise of his care team, he regained not only his strength, but also his confidence and determination.

Today, Owen continues outpatient therapy and is pushing himself toward new challenges—most recently completing a 750-meter swim, 15.5-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run in a triathlon in Ames.

“Thank you for helping me get back on my feet—literally and figuratively,” Owen said. “Your work makes all the difference.”

Last year, at just 16 years old, Trenton Burton was diagnosed with brain cancer. Instead of slowing down, he’s worked hard in therapy at Madonna, participated in two 5Ks, cheered on his favorite team at the Men’s College World Series, and welcomed his new Make-A-Wish therapy dog, KLIMO!

As he heads back to school, Trent’s goal is to get around without a wheelchair or walker, and his mom says he’s making amazing progress. His family is spreading hope during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month through their page, .

This summer break has looked a little different than 13-year-old Avery Mohrman expected. He thought he’d be playing baseball and hanging out with his friends. But after an ATV accident left him with several broken bones and head trauma, he’s spent the last three months recovering at Madonna. His care team found ways to incorporate his favorite hobbies and the upcoming school year into therapy, keeping him on track for his return to the classroom this month. Across Nebraska, students are preparing to return to the classroom. Thanks to our friends at the SammyStrong Foundation, kids who are participating in rehabilitation at Madonna will have everything they need to keep up with their studies. Sammy Strawn was diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer in 2020. As he continued his journey, he and his family relied on Madonna’s outpatient therapy to help him regain strength and navigate the side effects of cancer treatment. While at Madonna, Sammy and his family became close with the teachers in our Therapeutic Learning Center. Every year, he and his family fulfill an annual wish list for our TLC as a way of saying thank you.

Sammy turned 14 in August and is starting his 8th grade year. Since February 2021, his brain scans have remained clear, and he’s excited to be back doing what he loves most: playing baseball. He even went to a Chicago Cubs game this summer. His family encourages people to, “Keep fighting because hope is on deck!”
