A recent Brazilian clinical trial, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and widely reported in December 2025, marks a groundbreaking development in exploring cannabis for Alzheimer’s treatment.

Researchers at the Federal University of Latin American Integration conducted a phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving elderly patients aged 60-80 with mild Alzheimer’s disease.

Building on prior animal studies showing low-dose THC restoring cognition in aged mice and a 2022 case report where microdosing improved symptoms in one patient over 22 months, this trial tested daily oral microdoses of a balanced cannabis extract containing approximately 0.3 mg THC and 0.3 mg CBD—far below psychoactive levels.

Over 24-26 weeks, the treatment group showed stabilized cognitive function, as measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), while the placebo group experienced typical decline.

This pausing of progression represents the first human trial evidence of microdosing cannabinoids potentially halting Alzheimer’s-related cognitive deterioration without significant side effects.

Described as unprecedented, the approach leverages the endocannabinoid system’s role in neuroprotection, which naturally diminishes with age. Though promising, the study’s small sample size and limited scope to certain cognitive metrics highlight the need for larger, longer trials to confirm efficacy and safety.

Current Alzheimer’s therapies offer minimal benefit and often severe side effects, making this low-risk cannabinoid option a hopeful avenue amid rising dementia cases globally.

Although cannabis should not be in any schedule, just as alcohol is not, moving cannabis to Schedule III is a major breakthrough. For the first time in almost a century, federal law will acknowledge that cannabis has medical value and is less dangerous than opiates — a reality patients have known for millennia.

Today, President Trump issued a strong, pro-h**p Executive Order with significant implications for the future of the U.S. h**p industry. In response, we have released the following statement.


U.S. H**p Roundtable Statement
The U.S. h**p industry is deeply grateful to President Trump for issuing his strong pro-h**p Executive Order today. While the headlines of the announcement will focus on ma*****na rescheduling – which is a positive in itself, for any cannabis reform benefits the entire plant – we are especially pleased to see the provisions that direct the White House staff and urge Congress to ensure access to h**p-derived, full-spectrum CBD products, a lifeblood of the industry. We are also thrilled to see the development of a model that would allow a number of Medicare beneficiaries to receive CBD under doctor recommendation at no cost.

We consider this Executive Order to be a direct rebuke to the h**p ban that was malignly attached to legislation that reopened government. This also gives strong impetus to efforts to extend the ban’s moratorium an additional 18 months to allow proper time for Congress and the Trump Administration to develop the regulatory framework that ensures the safe provision of h**p products while cracking down on the bad actors peddling the unsafe products that the Executive Order calls out.

We look forward to working with the President, his staff, HHS, and Congress in the coming months to ensure the bipartisan vision of a safe, legal, and regulated h**p extract industry.
