🍂🤧 Fall Allergy Season in Nebraska: What Parents Should Know & Do 🤧🍂
As ragweed pollen, mold spores, and other allergens rise in the fall months in Nebraska, many children begin experiencing classic allergy symptoms. Staying proactive and consistent with treatment can make a big difference.
🍃Environmental control: Keep windows closed on high-pollen days; use air conditioning. Use HEPA filters indoors. Wash bedding weekly in hot water.
🧼Hygiene habits: Let children change clothes and take a shower after outdoor play. Wipe down surfaces to reduce indoor allergen accumulation.
👃🏻Non-drug aids: Use saline nasal rinses or sprays to help clear irritants and moisturize nasal passages.
💊Medication & treatment consistency: Use prescribed allergy meds exactly as advised (daily, even when symptoms are mild). Don’t skip doses just because your child seems better — consistency helps prevent flare-ups.
👨⚕️Allergy testing & specialist care: Knowing exactly what your child is allergic to helps tailor avoidance strategies and treatment. Talk to your pediatrician about a referral to an allergist.

The Power of the Family Table 🍽️
Did you know that something as simple as eating together can have big benefits for your child’s health and well-being?
🌟 Why Family Meals Matter
🔹Kids who share regular meals with their families tend to eat more fruits, veggies, and nutritious foods.
🔹Family meals are linked with lower rates of obesity and healthier eating habits overall.
🔹Conversations at the table build connection, reduce stress, and even support better mental health.
🔹Children learn by watching — when parents make healthy choices, kids are more likely to do the same.
✨ Tips for Making the Most of Family Meals
✔️ Aim for at least 3 meals together each week.
✔️ Keep screens off to encourage conversation.
✔️ Involve kids in setting the table or helping prepare simple foods.
✔️ Focus on connection, not perfection — even short, simple meals count!
👨👩👧👦 The family table is about more than food — it’s about building healthy habits, relationships, and memories that last a lifetime.

🌟 Boosting Your Child’s Immune Health: What Really Helps? 🌟
Parents often ask us about vitamins and supplements for building strong immune systems. The truth is, most healthy kids can get what they need from a balanced diet, but sometimes supplements may help. Here are some safe, evidence-based options:
💊 Common Supplements for Kids’ Immune Support
Vitamin D: Supports bone health and immune function. Many kids don’t get enough from food or sunlight.
Probiotics: May support gut health, which plays a big role in immunity.
Vitamin C & Zinc: Can be beneficial if a child’s diet is limited, but usually best from fruits, veggies, and whole foods.
🌱 Best Immune Boosters Still Come From Healthy Habits!
✔️ Nutritious foods (lots of fruits, veggies, and protein)
✔️ Daily physical activity
✔️ Plenty of sleep
✔️ Good handwashing habits
❗ Always check with your child’s pediatrician before starting supplements — every child’s needs are different.

Dr. Bernard Douglas
I was born and raised in Grand Island, Nebraska. I am honored to have attended college, medical school and my residency at the University of Nebraska. After residency, I was given the wonderful opportunity to become a Physician in Holdrege, Nebraska. It was there that I fully realized how much I wanted to care for each child as if I was caring for my own. I became Board Certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. A desire to bring hope to others led me and my family on an 8 year mission to Spain in 1995. This is where I became fluent in the Spanish Language. After returning to Omaha in 2004, I enjoyed teaching medical students and residents as part of the Creighton Medical School Faculty, as well as serving as a Pediatrician at the Creighton Pediatric Clinic. I transitioned to the Methodist Health System and served as a Pediatrician there for almost 8 years.
My wife, Debbie, and I have been married for almost 40 years. We have 9 children and 6 grandchildren. As a father, I know both the joys and concerns of parenting. I consider it a privilege to come alongside of parents, in times of both illness and health, with encouragement and education to provide support and quality of health care to your children.
I realized my dream was to open a private practice to provide care and medical support to my patients. Beyond Care Pediatrics was then founded in 2016 with the following mission statement- “Believing that each person; body, soul and spirit, is of immeasurable value and worth, we are committed to come alongside parents and families to provide excellent compassionate care for all infants, children, adolescents and young adults. In all we do, it is our desire to be true to the healing mission of Jesus Christ”.
