Today is the 100th anniversary of the founding of Martin Luther Home (MLH). Mosaic is grateful for the faith-inspired values handed down to us by the faithful Lutheran pastors and lay people who first answered the call to love and serve others in 1925. MLH joined Bethphage to create Mosaic in 2003, and now the call to love and serve drives our support for more than 5,000 people in 12 states.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The celebration honors the value and talent American workers with disabilities add to the country’s workplaces .

Individuals like Vanessa and Jill, who have not only gained new skills and confidence, but also found a sense of community and belonging with new friends and colleagues.

In Tanzania, our individuals served receive locally made wheelchairs that are built with creativity, care, and practicality in mind.

While these wheelchairs may look a bit rougher, each one is designed to grow with the child or young adult who uses it. The chairs often have adjustable footrests, headrests, straps, and trays that can be easily changed as the individual grows.

Because they’re made from locally sourced materials, repairs and replacement parts are more simple and more affordable which helps keep the chairs in use for many years. The large, bicycle-style wheels are ideal when navigating uneven roads and rough terrain.

Mosaic International is proud to locally source the needed materials for each wheelchair and to employ locals to create, build, and repair these wheel chairs as needed.

It is because of donors that make these wheel chairs possible!

Teri and Bootsie’s story is a perfect example of why to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The pair met in 2015 while living in a group home and quickly forged a friendship. When the home closed, they worried they might be separated. That’s when Tammy, a Mosaic at Home shared living provider, stepped in to help. Home-based services, like Mosaic at Home, are primarily Medicaid funded.

Watch how their friendship blossomed, instead of ended, because of Tammy’s heart and Medicaid funding: https://www.mosaicinfo.org/blog/bold-lives/friendship-blossoms-and-grows-through-mosaic-at-home/

This month will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Martin Luther Home, one of the organizations that created Mosaic in 2003. The organization’s philosophy of loving service was made clear in a 1929 brochure: “First of all we offer them an abundance of Christian love. Whipping, slapping, even scolding is absolutely prohibited. Kindness is our watchword.” The photo shows a few of the early residents of the home.

Our Story

Mosaic knows that international development of services for people with disabilities is best done in partnership. We’re big believers in accompaniment – we listen to, support and walk with local leaders and ministries to serve the world.

Mosaic’s international partnerships came to life in 1994 when faith leaders in Latvia approached us about providing coaching and other supports to a start-up organization supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, we’ve helped partners start and fund work in three countries – Latvia, Romania and Tanzania.

Additionally, we’re called in to provide consultation to organizations with like-minded goals and values that need additional expertise. Mosaic is one of only 47 organizations worldwide recognized with Special Consultative Status from the United Nations for expertise in “Disability, Development and Rights.”

Entirely funded by donors, our international program changes lives around the world. Your gift supports health and happiness for people with disabilities.
