Since we are entering the season of spring, I want to talk to you a little about staying healthy with the seasons and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Spring is the season of the Wood element and new growth. The wind (climate) is associated with wood as it clears the way for new growth and brings nurishment for the wood.
The Wood (think tree) element is associated with the spine (think the trunk of the tree) limbs, joints, poor flexibility, and arthritis is considered a wood imbalance.
The organs associated with wood are the liver and gallbladder, with the emotion being anger. (Think of plants (wood) breaking through the ground as a violent and angry act).
An imbalance in these organs may present as headaches, neck and back tensions, as well as mental tension, and also hip and thigh issues.
This direction is East. So someone who is a sluggish morning riser (sun rises in the East) may have an imbalance.
The color associated with the spring is Green! (New plants breaking through) A person that has an unusual attraction or dislike for the color green has a wood imbalance. Sometimes this can be seen by a slight green hue in the skin, esp around the eyes. In the spring, we tend to eat more green foods-peas, beans, sprouts, green grapes, kiwi, etc to balance out ourselves.
The sense organ associated with spring are the eyes, (think jaundice from the liver-seen in the whites of the eyes) which may be watery. Sometimes a sudden change in vision may be related to liver and gallbladder.
As massage therapists, we tend to see more headaches, (both tension and migraine), hips issues, neck, and whole back tensions at this time.
Since spring is a time or renewal and new beginnings, someone that is indecisive, has congestion, (think eyes or headache) or sluggish, may have an imbalance!
Someone adding green to their lives (whether through food, clothing, surroundings, etc) may be trying intuitively to balance out their bodies!
See the circle!
