What a day. What a community. What a mission. 🧡💙

On April 24th, nearly 200 people laced up their boots and showed up at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park for the AFSP Nebraska Construction Hike for Hope; and together, we raised over $20,000 for su***de prevention.
💛

To every walker, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who made this possible: thank you. The sticky notes on our Nebraska hope board, the families who walked in honor of someone they love, the construction community showing up in force; this is what movement looks like.
Every dollar raised supports education, advocacy, research, and loss support programs right here in Nebraska and across the country. And we’re already looking ahead with a $30,000 goal set for next year. 🎯

This is only the beginning. 💪

Thank you to our incredible sponsors whose generosity made this event possible. You are part of saving lives.

As a college student, Dan lost his father to su***de.

Finding the words and support to cope with the loss of his father was an obstacle Dan hopes no one else has to face alone.

Now, as a su***de loss survivor, Dan has served as a key player in the development of our loss and healing program “”Caring Communities: Guidance for Supporting Survivors of Su***de Loss.””

“”There are so many conflicting emotions people may experience when losing a loved one to su***de, such as anger, grief, and doubt, all of which I experienced. No one should ever have to travel this journey alone.””

Julie found the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention after her husband, David, died by su***de in 2011.

The couple met in medical school and after David’s death, Julie used her medical background to support the new education program Clinical Approach to Preventing Su***de: An Introduction. This program is an introductory overview of the clinician’s role in preventing su***de among patients, and covers risk and protective factors, warning signs, screening tools, brief interventions, and treatment options.

“”When you consider that the majority of those who die by su***de have contact with a medical professional within three months of taking their own life, it’s easy to recognize how important it is that health care providers know how to recognize that someone may be in distress, and know how to connect them with help.””
