When Dr. Jill started researching suicide 40 years ago, the consensus in the scientific community was that suicide could not be prevented. Now we know that this is false.

Today, Dr. Jill and Chris Munden, AFSPโ€™s Senior Manager of Research and Dissemination, discuss some of the research that has shown that suicide can be prevented and share some of the practical methods that may help someone in a crisis. ๐Ÿ’™

Many programs and policies are developed without direct input from the communities they strive to support. The Upright was created to change that.

As part of AFSP's ongoing commitment to support communities with disproportionate impacts related to suicide, The Upright is a collection of AFSP's resources that acknowledges the critical gaps in mental health care and aims to advance health equity in suicide prevention.

Research saves lives.

AFSP was founded in 1987 by survivors of suicide loss and researchers as a research organization dedicated to understanding suicide and identifying evidence-informed strategies to help save lives. Now, because of research, we know that:

๐Ÿง  There are elements related to brain function that make decision-making more difficult for someone in crisis.
๐Ÿ’™ Therapies and treatments exist that have been proven to help people who feel so desperate in their distress that they do not see a way to live.
๐Ÿ” ...and more.

Sometimes a teen struggling with their mental health just wants to talk to someone who gets them โ€” like another teen. ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ’™

An AFSP funded study led by Catherine Glenn, PhD, found that teen-to-teen crisis lines, which are staffed by trained adolescent volunteers, make teens more likely to open up. Not only does this benefit the teen calling the line, but volunteers reported feeling motivated, fulfilled, empathetic, and more.

At the first-ever Capitol Hill Fly-In, thirteen AFSP advocates met with their members of Congress and staff as they shaped federal funding priorities.

Advocates called on Congress to invest in critical programs, requesting:

๐Ÿ’™ $30M for the CDCโ€™s Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program
โ˜Ž๏ธ $534.6M for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
๐Ÿง  $2.19B for the National Institute of Mental Health

The need for culturally competent care is real and urgent.

Too often, the unique mental health care needs of marginalized populations and communities arenโ€™t met. We must do better.
