National Nutrition Month is focused on the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. How Does Nutrition Affect Mental Health? Well, food affects the brain in various ways, including:

1. Brain development - Food turns into protein building blocks
2. Brain growth - Specific nutrients contribute to connectivity
3. Healthy bacteria - Healthy bacteria is central to the connection between nutrition and mental health

A healthy gut keeps inflammation in check, and inflammation plays a vital role in cognition and mood. Since the brain and gut are connected, eating more gut-friendly foods may make a difference in overall mental health.
