During October, we observe National Depression Education & Awareness Month. This month helps teach us about the signs, symptoms, and treatment options for depression. It also lets all of us know that seeking help β€” either from a counselor, a trusted friend, or your community β€” is a sign of hope and strength. πŸŸ’πŸ’š

National Depression Education & Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. Depression is very difficult for the individual suffering with it, as well as for their friends and family. Depression makes its victims feel hopeless, distressed, worthless, and anxious, to name a few. Perhaps the most difficult part is that those who suffer from depression rarely see a light at the end of the tunnel, even if everything in their life is seemingly "going well." It's hard for others to grasp because many times, there's not an obvious problem in that person's life that would make them feel depressed. This is why it's important to get the conversation going, even if it's uncomfortable at first. It will save lives. πŸ’šπŸŸ’

Does setting boundaries sound demanding, harsh, rude, or forceful? If you've ever avoided setting a boundary for one of those reasons, this one is for you!

Healthy Boundaries are about what works or doesn't work for you, and not at all about controlling the other person into doing what you want. Your role is to speak up about what YOU need and give the other person the autonomy to still respond how they want. They can adjust to your behavioral request, ask for more clarification, let you know they need time to think about it, or they can say "no that doesn't work for me." While it can feel frustrating when someone isn't able or willing to meet your boundary requirements, you then also have the autonomy to decide how you want to proceed. You can accept their response, give it more time, find a compromise, or you may even decide to end communication.

October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month, This month aims to raise awareness about the disparities that exist in access to mental health services and advocate for policy changes that prioritize mental well-being. Depression affects more than 280 million people worldwide and is among the leading causes of disability. Though depression can be reliably diagnosed, few of the people affected receive proper treatment. If you or someone you know has been affected by depression, you are not alone.

Talking about mental health and su***de on a community-level can help raise awareness and support of su***de prevention efforts and encourage those who need extra support to connect to services. Surrounding people and families with supportive neighborhoods, businesses, faith communities, and school services is a critical way to support every person. Communities that work together in an intentional and proactive way is vital to changing the narrative about mental health and su***de. πŸ’™πŸ’œ

Often our first points of contact when we are struggling are our friends, family, or colleagues. If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, talking with them can be the difference in getting them the help they need. Talking to a loved one about mental health and su***de can be an uncomfortable and an uncertain topic but it is also one of the best ways to prevent it. πŸ’™πŸ’œ

What we say to ourselves and others can encourage hope, celebrate life and help ourselves and others understand that help is available, su***de is preventable and mental illnesses are treatable. It can be hard for individuals, families, organizations, and communities to talk about mental health. But not talking about mental health and su***de can increase the risk of people that are struggling and potentially decrease the likelihood that someone will seek help when they need it the most. Instead, create a narrative of hope and resilience as it can influence how people think, feel, and act and lets us know that there is hope, there is help, and su***de is preventable. πŸ’™πŸ’œ
