✅ Fit for Work? Understanding the Difference Between Fit for Duty & Return to Work Exams

At Integrated Care, we’re often asked: What’s the difference between a Fit for Duty exam and a Return to Work exam? Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔹 Fit for Duty Exam

Purpose: Determines if an employee can safely perform the essential functions of their job.

Typical Uses:

Post-offer/pre-employment (before officially starting a role)

After an incident or when there are concerns about safety or ability

Safety-sensitive roles

Focus: Evaluates overall capability—strength, mobility, mental status, or other job-related functions.

🔹 Return to Work Exam

Purpose: Conducted after injury, illness, surgery, or medical leave to see if the employee can safely resume their specific job duties.

Typical Uses:

Workers’ compensation injuries

Medical/surgical leave

Determining restrictions or accommodations

Focus: Evaluates recovery from a specific condition and whether the employee can return to work, with or without restrictions.

⚖️ Key Distinction

Fit for Duty: Can this person safely do the job, in general?

Return to Work: Can this person safely resume their job after a medical issue?
