September is ***deawarenessmonth and I want to take some time to shed some light on this subject because it’s a tough thing we often don’t know how to talk about.
Su***de is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. It is the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-34 years.
As a therapist these are some of the things I always want people to understand about su***de:
-Talking about it does not increase someone’s risk. It actually decreases it.
-Su***de is not selfish. When someone gets to the point where they decide to end their own life they are in so much pain this feels like the only way to end that pain.
-Su***de does not discriminate. It doesn’t care what your skin color is, how much money you make, how old you are, how loved you are, or how successful you are. It can impact anyone.
-Some people struggle with chronic suicidal thoughts. They may think about it daily, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want to end their life or have a plan to do so. Over-reactions can be just as harmful as under-reacting. Sometimes just being there to listen and letting someone know you care about them is the most powerful thing you can do.
If you are someone who has struggled with suicidal thoughts please know this: you are not broken, you are not alone and your life matters. Stay; Because tomorrow needs you.
