Let’s talk transfers!

We know it’s something no one wants to think about when planning a homebirth, but transfers do happen - whether they are done before, during, or after birth. Unfortunately, Certified Professional Midwives are not integrated into the healthcare system in Nebraska, and that often makes transfer complicated. Your charts cannot easily be sent to a receiving hospital. Your midwife cannot just walk in and explain to the doctors and nurses what’s going on.

The sad truth is that transferring homebirth clients are sometimes treated very poorly by hospital staff. They are often subjected to CPS calls and drug testing on their newborns, because the hospital has no record of them having prenatal care. (In reality, homebirth clients get AMAZING prenatal care, with hour-long appointments and individualized attention!)

If CPMs were licensed and integrated into the healthcare system, transfers could be done much more smoothly, with no lapse in care. Charts could be sent electronically, and hospital staff could familiarize themselves with your health history before you even arrive.

Making the decision to transfer can be very difficult for a birthing family; let’s make it as safe and easy as possible!
