All 16 passengers from the MV Hondius are now being monitored and assessed in the National Quarantine Unit at Davis Global Center.

One passenger was initially taken to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit upon arrival from the Canary Islands early Monday morning. He has been medically cleared to move to the National Quarantine Unit.

UNMC has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Center for the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), placing UNMC among a select group of institutions helping shape the world’s response to emerging health threats.

The university’s designation as a WHO Collaborating Center is the only one in Nebraska.

The team from the National Quarantine Unit, in collaboration with public health partners, is continuing assessments on passengers from the MV Hondius today.

Fifteen passengers are currently in the National Quarantine Unit (NQU) and one patient is in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit (NBU).

Assessments include regular symptom monitoring and in-depth interviews with each passenger, led by federal public health partners with participation from the NQU team. The goal of those interviews is to determine each passenger’s actions on the ship to determine their contact with any of the other passengers who were confirmed to have Hantavirus.

Sixteen Americans who were on a cruise ship associated with a hantavirus outbreak have been repatriated to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

News conference to update arrival of MV Hondius cruise ship passengers

The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit has been activated ahead of the arrival of US citizens from the cruise ship associated with a hantavirus outbreak. Those passengers are expected to land in Omaha early Monday morning. One passenger will be transported to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit upon arrival, while other passengers will go to the National Quarantine Unit for assessment and monitoring. The passenger who is going to the Biocontainment Unit tested positive for the virus but does not have symptoms. They were managed separately from other passengers during transport using appropriate biocontainment measures. They will be monitored in the Biocontainment Unit out of an abundance of caution and follow-up testing will be performed.

Nebraska Medicine and UNMC experts will join federal, state and local partners to update the community Monday morning.
