Why I keep little shoes in my office as a therapist.
For perspective.
When a client (kiddo or adult) gets stuck in:
“I should have done something…”
“I could have stopped it…”
“I should’ve known better…”
I don’t debate it.
I reach for the shoes.
Small. Real. undeniable.
Because suddenly we’re not in the abstract anymore.
We’re face to face with the truth:
That version of you was little.
And little people don’t have the power to “do the thing.”
They don’t have the capacity.
They don’t have the resources.
They don’t have the nervous system for it.
That’s what makes this such a powerful EMDR interweave.
It shifts from logic…
to something the body can actually take in.
Not just “I get it.”
“I feel it.”
Sometimes the work isn’t about explaining more…
It’s about making the truth visible.
