David Michael Shafer
“Fuzzy”
June 25, 1963 – November 1, 2025

David “Fuzzy” Shafer passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 1, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1963, in Red Wing, Minnesota — though he’d probably want everyone to know that was just a technicality, since he was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan through and through.

Fuzzy was the beloved son of the late Robert M. Shafer and Jeannine G. Shafer. He is survived by his mother, his children, Nicole G. Shafer and Conner M. Shafer, and his granddaughter, Nalani J. Wittenberg. He also leaves behind his sisters, Debra (Shafer) Moran and Dawn (Shafer) Koca; two nieces, Colleen and Megan Moran, and can't forget his chocolate lab, Ms. Hershey; as well as his extended family and countless friends who loved him like their own.

He graduated from Green Mountain High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. After high school, like his father, Fuzzy worked for the BNSF Railroad, where he spent 40 years working as a conductor — a career he was proud of and retired from at the age of 58. His coworkers and friends will remember him for his humor, loyalty, and that unmistakable laugh that could fill a room.

Fuzzy was truly one of a kind — the life of every gathering and the reason people’s cheeks hurt from laughing. He loved to fish, hunt, and spend time outdoors. If there was a grill nearby, he was in charge of it, usually with a joke in one hand and a spatula in the other. And when the Packers were playing, you could bet he’d be yelling at the TV like they could hear him.

He had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome, smile bigger, and laugh harder. He will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him — but his spirit, stories, and laughter will never be forgotten.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 14th at 12:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason St., Onalaska, followed by burial. Family and friends are invited for an open-casket visitation from 10:30 A.M till the time of the service. In honor of Fuzzy, we ask you to wear your favorite Hawaiian Shirt and a hat with a funny saying if you’d like.

In true Fuzzy fashion — one last time… “Security!”

Carol Joanne (Espelien) Swedberg passed away on November 4,2025 at Riverside Transitional Care, La Crosse, WI from dementia.

Carol was born on March 12,1942 at the old Spring Grove, MN hospital to Theodore and Emma (Johnson) Espelien. She grew up on the family farm just north of Spring Grove and graduated from Spring Grove High School. She attended a clerical school in Mankato, MN and then was employed for a short time at G. Heileman, La Crosse, WI.

Carol was the 1962 Spring Grove Dairy Princess. In June 1962, while riding on the Dairy Princess float at Dairy Days, she was noticed by a young man who was new to town. Later that week, she and the young man happened to be at a local restaurant at the same time and found each other. Dennis Swedberg was that young man. Carol and Dennis were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, MN on February 10, 1963.

After marriage, they moved to a home in Dakota, MN and later bought a home in La Crescent, MN. They raised their family in La Crescent. Carol and Dennis had two children, Susan Marie in 1968 and Brian Lee in 1970. Carol was a very good homemaker and raised her children in a very loving way. She was always proud of her children.

Carol worked at Sears, first downtown and then at Valley View Mall, for twenty years part-time but most weeks turned out to be almost full- time. In mid 1990s Carol and Dennis retired from their jobs and devoted their time to running Swedberg Apartments. They spent a lot of time remodeling, repairing, and maintaining several apartment buildings. This kept them busy until they fully retired at the end of 2016.

Carol is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughter, Susan (Bill) Boisvert; son, Brian (Danielle) Swedberg; grandchildren Zachary (Rebecca), Brinli, Paytience, Lydia, and Theodore Swedberg; great grandchildren, Aria, Thea, and Micah Swedberg; brothers Truman (Carol) Espelien and Gordon Espelien; three nieces and a nephew.

According to Carol’s wishes, she will be cremated with no funeral service and a burial later at Trinity Cemetery, Spring Grove, MN.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Riverside Transitional Care for the kindness, compassion, and wonderful care they provided to Carol over the past four years. A special thank you to Vickie, Chandra, and Chelsea.

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family during this difficult time.

History

Coulee Region Cremation Group was founded on January 1, 2010. The plan was to start with low overhead in order to keep costs down and prices affordable. Being born and raised in the Coulee Region, this concept was designed to benefit the local community that didn’t have a cremation focussed option.

Through the years, the company has adapted to the changing needs of the families we serve. In the beginning, outsourcing was the focus. Overtime as the company grew, we are proud to offer inclusive services where everything is done in house. We have been the trend setter in the State of Wisconsin and will strive to keep Coulee Region Cremation Group at the forefront of the industry.

Whether you want a reception with a lunch in our dining room, an open-house gathering with your family and friends, or a traditional service with a minister, your expectations will be met. My wife, Tracy, daughter, Fin, son, Ben and I thank you for trusting us with your family. It is an honor and privilege to serve you. Let’s celebrate life together.
