It is with mixed emotions that we are announcing that Stangel Pharmacy will be closing on Friday, August 30th. This decision has not been easy, but the current state of pharmacy reimbursement has made it too difficult for an independent pharmacy like ours to remain profitable.

We are excited to announce that our prescription files have been purchased by Lewis Family Drug. You may recognize the name as they have locations in other small Iowa communities such as Moville and Ida Grove. Lewis is headquartered in Sioux Falls and has locations in many communities throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. They will be opening a new pharmacy with most of our staff in Onawa.

The transition to Lewis Family Drug will begin with the closure of Stangel Home Medical Equipment on July 1st. Current home medical patients will be handed off to ‘Unity Point at Home’ in Sioux City. Once that building is available, Lewis Family Drug will open a temporary pharmacy in our medical equipment building. This will be a temporary location for Lewis as they work to build a new state-of-the-art pharmacy with an immunization room and drive-thru in Onawa. They are hoping to have the new building open in 2025. Stangel Pharmacy’s last day will be Friday, August 30th (the Friday before Labor Day), and Lewis Family Drug will open on September 3rd (the day after Labor Day).

We anticipate this being a smooth transition. All prescriptions will be transferred to Lewis Family Drug. Most all our employees will come along with Lewis Family Drug. We will still offer delivery and the same level of customer service.

It has been our great pleasure to serve this community for the last almost 5 decades. We have been incredibly fortunate to have the support and trust of the community. Your support has meant the world to us, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

We are saddened by the end of this long run, but we are excited about the future with Lewis Family Drug. The community will be in good hands, and we look forward to the investment they are willing to make in our community with a new building.
