The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

As this week’s Staff Pick, I’ve selected “The Buffalo Hunter Hunter,” a sorrowful title that follows the transcription of a diary recounting the revenge of a Blackfeet vampire. What is a fictional take on the Marias Massacre in Montana and the tragedy wrought upon the Piikáni, Stephen Graham Jones tells a tale of heartbreak, tragedy, and retribution. As a First Nations person, it is pertinent to have not only representation in media, but also experience enjoyment from the content that we consume. Personally, Jones’s fantastic story-telling has not only had me glued to the page, but also incredibly impressed as I’ve devoured this truly unique First Nations vampire horror.

Book: we don't eat our CLASSMATES by Ryan Higgins

It’s Penelope Rex’s first day of school, and she can’t wait to make new friends. However, Penelope has a problem... making friends is so very difficult when they’re just so delicious! Penelope must learn how to fit into the classroom without turning her classmates into mid-day snacks, and my goodness it is hard work! “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” speaks to the difficulty of feeling left out when you’re a little dinosaur, and how to make friends in the face of such a complicated predicament. Young readers will giggle at Penelope’s peculiar taste, and one can only ask... what will make her stop?
