We kick off Women's History Month with one of the most influential women in the I/DD Community - Judith Heumann. Judy was a trailblazer in the disability rights movement who fought for equal access and inclusion. In the 1970s, she challenged the New York Board of Education, protested President Richard Nixon’s veto of the Rehabilitation Act, and helped lead a 28-day sit-in to demand enforcement of disability protections. She later co-founded the World Institute on Disability and continued advocating for the global disability community until her death in 2023.

This month, we will highlight the accomplishments of women to movements both in the I/DD field, and the Sustainability field - two important movements to the work we do at The Arc Otsego. Keep an eye on our posts for more! The Arc New York

DSPs are essential to the I/DD community, and they need our support. That's why we're calling on New York legislators to expand workforce support for childcare, healthcare, and housing. A little extra help can make a world of difference!

Brad Lomax was a Black Panther member who used a wheelchair after a spinal cord injury and became a key disability rights activist. He helped connect the civil rights movement with the disability rights movement, showing how these struggles overlap. His work pushed for accessibility as a civil right, not a privilege.

The support system the I/DD community relies on is complex and requires ongoing investment. Let's continue to urge our lawmakers to invest in all New Yorkers living with I/DD and those who care for them.

Continuing our Black History Month feature series with Simone Biles. Simone is an Olympian who has been open about prioritizing her mental health, helping change how we talk about wellness in sports. She showed that taking care of your mind is just as important as physical strength. Her honesty helps reduce stigma around mental health in both the Black and disability communities.
