Blount County Children's Center

Blount County Children's Center A child advocacy center, serving children and adults who have experienced the trauma of child abuse. OUR SERVICES:

1. B.

Coordinated, Multi-agency Child Abuse Investigations

A. Investigations: The Blount County Children’s Center leads the effort to encourage all local agencies working with abused children to work together as a team on child abuse cases. When a report of child sexual abuse or serious physical abuse is made to DHR or law enforcement, both agencies work together to investigate the report. The non-abusing parents or guardians are asked to bring the child to the Children’s Center, where a detailed investigative interview is recorded. One trained interviewer talks with the child, while all other agencies needing the information view the interview on closed circuit television. This lessens the number of people interviewing the child and lessens the trauma associated with disclosing abuse. A plan to protect the child is developed, as well as strategies for interviewing the alleged perpetrator. Team members continue to investigate the case for possible prosecution and protection of the abused child, and provide assistance and guidance to the child and non-abusing family members as they negotiate the court process. Case Review: The Blount County Children’s Center organizes and coordinates the Multi-disciplinary Child Abuse Response Team, which meets monthly at the Children’s Center. The team reviews the status of all open child sexual abuse and all serious physical abuse cases in Blount County, makes recommendations to the District Attorney regarding possible prosecution of the alleged offender, and discusses child safety and counseling needs. The Team includes representatives from DHR, the District Attorney's office, law enforcement agencies, Juvenile Probation, Blount County Schools, Blount County Health Department, Juvenile Court, and the Children's Center staff.

2. Free Professional Therapy
Abuse, especially sexual abuse, is not something one gets over in a few weeks. It usually takes extended therapy for abused children and their non-abusing family members to get their lives back together and begin to heal from the abuse. Free professional therapy is provided for child abuse victims, as well as, adult survivors of child sexual abuse and victims of domestic violence, rape and other traumatic crimes. Abuse specific therapy is also critical in preventing the cycle of abuse from extending to future generations.

3. School-based Child Abuse Prevention
Many children will not tell anyone, or perhaps just another child about their abuse. We encourage and help children to tell responsible adults through our presentations to school children in grades kindergarten through 6th grade. The program provides children and faculty with information on child abuse and how to avoid or stop abusive situations, and what to do when abuse occurs. Nearly every time we visit a school, one or more children finally gather enough courage to tell for the first time about the abuse which has been happening to them. Often sexual abuse has gone on for years without ever being reported.

4. Public Awareness
Public Awareness is a powerful tool in fighting child abuse, and the Blount County Children’s Center strives to make the citizens of our county aware of the nature and scope of the problem, and what can be done to stop the abuse. We make presentations throughout the year to various community organizations, participate in various fairs and festivals, and use our local media to disseminate information about child abuse. We also provide training events for child abuse professionals and others in the community. Funding for our various programs is provided in part by:

United Way of Central Alabama
Alabama Department of Economic and Community Development,
VOCA
State Legislative Appropriation
Blount County Health Care Authority
Oneonta City Schools
Blount County Commission

⭐️Our families are in need, and we need the community's help!⭐️

So often, we don’t hear the stories behind the families who rely on food assistance.

You don’t hear about the mom who fled an abusive home with nothing but her children and the clothes on their backs.

You don’t hear about the dad trying to start over after losing everything to addiction or job loss.

You don’t hear about the child who adds “nonperishable food” to their Christmas list because they’ve learned what it feels like to be hungry. That happened last week, and it stopped us in our tracks.

This is the reality we see every day in the field we work in. It’s raw. It’s humbling.

Right now, we need grocery gift cards to help families in crisis. These gift cards will allow families to buy things we aren't capable of providing — fresh vegetables, milk, meat, or even a loaf of bread.

Today, we are especially thankful for every person who has donated to the Children’s Center’s food pantry or given a gift card to help a struggling family. You may not realize it, but your kindness provides more than food — it gives hope, dignity, and a sense of worth to someone who truly needs it.

Let’s choose empathy over judgment. Every can, every dollar, every act of giving matters.

Becoming a Forensic Interview Specialist—especially one trained in the nationally recognized Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) model—typically involves specialized education and hands-on training. The National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is one of the primary organizations in the U.S. that provides this professional training.

This ensures:
Interviews are legally sound and admissible in court.

Children aren’t subjected to multiple interviews.

Proper evidence handling and documentation are maintained.

✨We’re thrilled to share that Hannah has successfully completed her Forensic Interview Training through the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC). ✨

Our community has experienced an unimaginable loss this week. The passing of a child is something no one should ever have to endure, and the ripple effect of that heartbreak is being felt deeply by so many. As an organization that exists to support children and families, our hearts ache alongside every person who loved and knew Kimber.

Moments like these remind us how powerful it can be when a community comes together. In the midst of pain, we’ve witnessed unity, kindness, and strength. Kimber’s story has united an entire community — people showing up for one another, holding each other close, and proving that love always shines brightest in the darkest times.

We want to gently remind everyone: it’s okay to not be okay. Grief looks different for everyone, and there’s no timeline for healing. What matters is that no one carries this pain alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out — to a friend, a trusted adult, a counselor, or a support organization. Talking to someone can make a difference.

Our community is resilient, but resilience doesn’t mean we have to be strong on our own. It means leaning on one another, offering comfort, and creating space for both tears and healing. Let’s continue to wrap those who are hurting in love, compassion, and support in the days and weeks to come.

Rest in peace, Kimber Mills. Your light and love will forever live on in this community. 💕

🌟 Professional Growth in Action 🌟

This week, Hannah is at the National Children’s Advocacy Center completing specialized training to become a Child Forensic Interview Specialist.

Forensic interviews are a critical part of the child advocacy process. These interviews are conducted in a safe, child-friendly, and legally sound manner to give children a space to share their experiences in their own words. The goal is to minimize trauma while gathering the information needed for investigations and ensuring the child’s well-being remains the top priority.

Hannah’s training will help strengthen our team’s ability to advocate for children, support families, and pursue justice. We are so proud of her for taking this important step to better serve the children in our community.💙

We are so excited to share a first look at our new outdoor therapy area! 🌿✨

Thanks to generous grants from Marshalls and United Way, designated specifically for this project, we were able to create a safe and private space designed with our clients’ healing in mind. While there are still a few finishing touches to complete, we just couldn’t wait to give you a sneak peek!

This space will provide children and families with a calming, ther**eutic environment outside the walls of our center. Being outdoors helps reduce stress and creates a sense of safety that supports the healing process.

This is Phase One of our outdoor therapy project, and we’re already looking ahead to Phase Two. Our hope is to secure additional grant funding to expand this space even further — creating more opportunities for healing, growth, and hope for the children and families we serve.

A huge thank you to AW Construction for taking our vision and bringing it to life. We are so grateful for this partnership and what this space will mean for our community. 💚
