Brothers Brandin and Alex have been busy in their community with their most recent adventure, which included bowling. The pair, with support from their sister, Brittany, participated in Special Olympics Bowling, representing the Central Region. They had a day full of fun, testing their skills, and making friends along the way!

Alex has worked on becoming more involved in activities and increasing his independence. This is a huge milestone, and Brandin and Brittany supported him every step of the way! STC is proud to work alongside family and caregivers to support members in achieving their goals.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

Care Coordination Managers Ellen Pernat and Joanna Jackson attended an awareness tabling event to represent STC in our community. There, the pair shared with healthcare employees how STC supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to coordinate care.

Elected officials in New York State are working to pass next year’s budget, including a Targeted Inflationary Increase (TII) for Care Coordination Organizations (CCOs) that would affect STC.

Based on feedback from the Senate, we are asking that you share the stories, photos, and videos that show that your Care Coordination Managers (CCMs) are your direct support. Advocates are working to dispel the misunderstanding that CCMs do not provide direct support. You can support CCMS by including a simple message in your outreach to elected officials, “My care manager IS my direct support. Include care coordination managers in the COLA.”

If funding is not restored, providers will struggle to retain staff, manage increasing costs, and continue delivering high-quality care to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) and STC is proud to highlight Steven Rivera, the newest member of the STC Board of Directors. He joins the board as an STC member and strong self-advocate. In his own words, "It's important for me to be part of the board because I can help advocate for those in need." Steven shares this simple, yet impactful message, "Just because you have disabilities (no matter what they are) you can live a normal, active life."

STC is excited for Steven to have a greater impact on the future of STC and its advocacy, as a board member!

STC member James has a great team behind him! Every six months, James’s mom visits from Puerto Rico to attend his Life Plan meetings with his CCM, Beth. James attends Transitions and community college, working closer to his goals every day! Beth has supported James in enrolling in several programs to build his education and independence.

On his mom’s most recent visit, the pair shopped for a new outfit for Transitions’ upcoming dance, enjoyed meals, attended church together, and celebrated James’s birthday!

CCMs support members, alongside caregivers, with whatever they need to thrive and live fulfilling lives.

New York State’s Care Coordination Organizations (CCOs), like STC, provide local care and support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

In the upcoming state budget, you can advocate for CCOs to receive Targeted Inflationary Increase (TT, previously known as Cost of Living Adjustment, or COLA). Contact your state legislator through CMANY’s website to ensure that CCOs can maintain a stable workforce, address rising operational costs, and continue providing essential services to 135,000 New Yorkers with I/DD.

Congratulations to Corey on his recent achievement at school!

STC member Corey has been working diligently to be an exemplary student. He recently received an award recognizing his academic accomplishments and positive contributions to his school community, both in and out of the classroom.

Melinda Sheppard, Corey’s care coordination manager, has supported Corey and his family to ensure he has everything he needs to thrive in school. This collaborative, person-centered approach is what makes STC's care unique.

Care Coordination Manager (CCM) Emilie Perez recently visited two members at the Hartwick Day Program. The visit included an exciting game of Bingo with member Dan, who nearly won! The Day Program participants had also recently decorated the room with their beautiful Valentine's Day crafts, showcasing their love for the people and things most dear to them. It was a day filled with festive games and crafts—a delight to everyone present!

Southern Tier Connect (STC) CCMs develop personal relationships with each member they support. Emilie’s visit is a great example of the person-centered approach that sets STC care apart!

Join STC for an interactive panel-presenter workshop designed to demystify the transition process, hosted by the Homer Central School District! There will be a variety of experts from the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), education, vocational rehabilitation, and community services to discuss what life for students and their families can look like after graduation.
