Are you a label reader? I have been since becoming a Massage Therapist in 2000. It is amazing how many toxins are in so many packaged foods, drinks, and topical and cleaning products. On your skin, please avoid: rubbing alcohol, mineral oil, propylene glycol, parabens, TEA, DEA, and as I remember the others, I will post them. In foods, please avoid high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, artificial sweeteners, and the aforementioned toxins. Homemade is almost always better than packaged foods. God bless, stay active, and spend some time outdoors every day, The recommendation is at least 15 minutes in the sun withe face and arms exposed and without sunscreen, as it blocks your body's synthesis of vitamin D. It has been a while since I last posted here. I miss my website for Healing Touch by Karen. I was a very active AMTA member since I was a massage student in Hal Rudnianin's Institute of Massage Therapy 1999-2000. I lived in Rhinelander Wisconsin then. I easily became a "continuing education ju**ie". I averaged 3 classes per year, sponsored by American Massage Therapy Association - AMTA, and attended at least 8 AMTA National Conventions and one other(I think World Massage Therapy Convention) in Chicago.
Fast forward to 2000. Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer made another executive order that hair care and massage therapy are "non-essential services". Wow! Did that ever hit my business!!!! Once we were considered cautiously safe, some clients returned. I cut back expenses-no advertising, no AMTA website, no nursing or massage malpractice insurance. I decided to pass on the savings to my clients, and dropped my rates. (Thank goodness that Facebook does not charge businesses anything!) For that, I am greatful.
I will continue massage and foot care this year until December 20th. Dave and I will snowbird in Arizona from January through March 2025 again. I will announce my return to business in April.
Meanwhile, I had such a good time giving free 5 to 8 minute chair massages at the AMA Craft Show at the Rockland Town Hall last December, that I will do it again December 14th from 10am to 3pm. It is like an apology for being a Snowbird!

Yoiks! A new client yesterday went to my webpage and it said I was permanently closed. Not my business. I did close my paid webpage during the Covid lockdown, as well as my nursing and massage malpractice insurance, as the lockdown very much affected my business. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said massage therapy was a non-essential service. I am definitely still in business doing massage and footcare. I am no longer an AMTA member, although I recommend the AMTA Find a Massage Therapist webpage whenever a client is traveling or has a different seasonal home. My Facebook webpage is all I have, and word of mouth in my continuing business, Healing Touch by Karen, Just call 906-250-3357 if you want an appointment.

Another health (and wealth) tip. Some of you may remember from many years ago, a catchy tune that was a soap ad-
"Feel shampoo clean all over with Zest"!
Well, as I played this tune in my brain, I thought , "well, if you have lathered the shampoo on your head, why not step over from the shower flow and rub the suds on the body parts that need it, then rinse it all off. No need for a bar of soap in the shower."
Also, since liquid hand soap in a bottle with sq**rt top first came out, I always have used that. I only have bought bar soap for my husbands, as requested.
I also learned of the dangers of a very commonly used chemical named "triclosan" in the early 2000s. I read the microbiologist's paper from the 2004 international microbiology symposium about the danger of Triclosan, and how it is even found in fish livers from many different bodies of water. It was already banned in Europe, but is made in the USA, so we certainly could not ban it here! Triclosan is still in many products called "antimicrobial", in liquid soaps for hands, shampoos, dish soap, yes, even in toothpaste. (That, toothpaste, and water supply is a later topic.)

It is so good to be back into the swing of being back in the UP and my dual professions via Healing Touch by Karen!
I have been contemplating posting wellness tips on this,my Facebook Healing Touch by Karen web page. Feel free to call me.
First, I would like to tell all of you women and girls from puberty on to “phluff the girls” on a regular basis. This means holding your hand (or hands if you are generously endowed) under your breasts and bounce them up (gravity will take them down) 10-12 times in a row, rapidly. Then gently slide the side your hands back and forth a few times beneath your breasts. Then, with your fingertips, tap gently across your upper chest for a minute or so. Why? To move the lymph around and in your breasts, to help rid your body of toxins. If you want to see a video of this, go to YouTube an search for Phluffing the Girls. The originator of this technique is Cheryl Chapman, an RN and Massage Therapist in New Jersey. In 2003 I took an 8 hour continuing education class at the AMTA Diamond Jubilee National Convention in Richmond Virginia. The two best things I learned from her class were 1. Phluffing the Girls technique and 2. The advantages of thermography vs mammography. If you are interested in 1. Watch YouTube, #2, research thermography. The only place in the UP that I am aware of is the Wellness Center in Marquette.
Men, should you do this too? Possibly. It is possible for men to get breast cancer.
Guess which body part in men should be phluffed? Yes, indeed. I have never heard of a man wanting testicular cancer
