Last week, community leaders joined us for East Alabama Health’s first-ever State of the System, a historic look at how far we’ve come and where we’re headed next.

From adding 30 new ICU beds at East Alabama Medical Center and opening East Alabama Medical Center North, to welcoming 33 new physicians and expanding our graduate medical education programs and clinical research, our focus remains clear: delivering high-quality, compassionate health care to the communities we serve.

We also celebrated two outstanding leaders whose work is shaping care across our region:

🏆 Dr. Nojan Valadi, recipient of the Physician Impact Award, has built a nationally recognized stroke program at East Alabama Health. Under his leadership, our Stroke Center has earned recognition from the American Heart Association for meeting rigorous, research-based standards of stroke care.

🏆 Tanya Rice, director of our Office of Patient Safety, received the inaugural Terry Andrus Leadership Award for her extraordinary leadership and commitment to safety and excellence across our system.

Today marks 74 years since Lee County Hospital opened its doors in 1952! 🎉

The hospital’s first patient was Iva Dean Sharpe who gave birth that day to Deanna, longtime owner of Miss Deanna’s Childcare. This picture is from the mid-1950s, before the hospital’s first expansion in 1959. Lee County Hospital became East Alabama Medical Center in 1981 and is the flagship hospital for East Alabama Health.

If you were born here in the past 74 years, comment below and tell us which year!

National Cancer Prevention Month is a reminder that small, everyday choices can make a powerful difference in lowering your cancer risk. While not every diagnosis is preventable, focusing on modifiable risk factors is a meaningful step toward protecting your long-term health.

✔️ Don’t smoke (and avoid secondhand smoke). Quitting at any stage improves your health and reduces your risk for multiple cancers.
✔️ Alcohol: Less is better. Limiting how much you drink can help lower your risk.
✔️ Maintain a healthy weight & stay active. Regular movement and balanced habits support your overall well-being.
✔️ Eat for prevention (not perfection). Aim for a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
✔️ Sun safety matters. Use sunscreen, seek shade, and protect your skin year-round.
✔️ Vaccines & screenings are prevention tools you might not expect. Staying up to date can help detect concerns early, or prevent some cancers altogether.

Prevention doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with one change, build from there, and give your future self something to thank you for.

Deandra Hyatt has always felt a calling to health care. She began her career in the 1990s and continued building her path through East Alabama Health’s School at Work (now known as Pathways to Advancement) program. Most recently, she became a member of the inaugural class of EAH’s Scrub Tech Apprenticeship Program, helping set the standard and pave the way for future apprentices.

Through hands-on training and mentorship, she found her place in the operating room at The Surgery Center. “Surgery is not just about passing instruments… it goes beyond that with the peace that you just helped save someone’s life.”

Our Scrub Tech Apprenticeship Program continues to prepare dedicated team members for this vital role. To learn more about this program, visit www.eastalabamahealth.org/careers-and-resources/education-and-training/scrub-tech-apprenticeship-program.

From a last-minute stop at a job fair to stepping into her dream role, Katie Reaves is proof that taking a chance on yourself can change everything.

Through East Alabama Health’s Pathways to Advancement program and on-site LPN program, Katie found the support, flexibility, and encouragement she needed to grow her career while balancing work, school, and family. Today, she’s making an impact as a nurse in Psychiatric Services, and she’s just getting started.

“No one is going to believe in you more than you,” Katie said. “Once you start believing in yourself, the way doors open is astronomical.”
