The first art therapy session at the Spencer Cancer Center brought patients together not just to create art, but to find connection and encouragement during their cancer journey.🎨

“This program was designed to give our patients an outlet to express themselves,” said Chris Waits, executive director of oncology. “Navigating a diagnosis can be stressful, so we wanted to create an opportunity for connection and creative expression that simultaneously supports our patients’ minds, bodies and spirits as they undergo their fight.”

During the first group session, participants created affirmation collages filled with meaningful words and positive messages. Jackie McDonough, a breast cancer survivor who took part in the session, shared how meaningful the experience was. "I understood that the reason for it was for fellowship, which I think is really important, because you are more comfortable sharing with people who have gone through what you have gone through," she said.

Programs like art therapy and the Oncology Wellness Program continue to help create a supportive, uplifting environment at the Spencer Cancer Center.

East Alabama Health was proud to host the Auburn University Microbiology Club for a behind-the-scenes look at how microbiology impacts patient care across our hospital. 🧪

On National Infection Preventionist Day, it is especially meaningful to highlight the critical work being done to prevent infections and protect patient safety every day. From the lab to the bedside, microbiology is a true team effort, bringing together experts in laboratory, infection prevention, pharmacy, infectious disease, and beyond to identify pathogens, guide treatment, and implement standards of care.

As a nationally recognized Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, this work reflects the strength of our interdisciplinary team and their commitment to high-quality care. We enjoyed sharing insight into the many career paths in microbiology and the important role each plays in healthcare.

A "Heartfelt" Message Highlights the Beginning of Donate Life Month 💙💚

Community members, medical staff and local leaders gathered yesterday, April 1 at East Alabama Medical Center to honor the gift of life and those who make it possible through organ, tissue and eye donation.

The ceremony included a powerful story from local mother Amanda Carpenter. Her son, Davis Boswell, underwent a lifesaving heart transplant in 2015, a gift made possible by 6-month-old donor John Clarke Perry of Monroe, Louisiana. This year marks 10 years since the Perry and Boswell families met at EAMC, a reminder of the lasting impact of saying “yes” to organ donation.

Following the ceremony, a Donate Life flag was raised on the hospital’s main lawn and will remain throughout April to promote awareness and honor donors and their families.
