Many children learn the alphabet by singing the ABC song… but that doesn’t actually prepare them to read.

The alphabet song helps children memorize a sequence, but it often causes confusion when identifying individual letters. For example, “LMNOP” can sound like one word instead of five separate letters.

At Leaping Literacy Dyslexia Therapy, we teach students to say letter names clearly and intentionally…not sing them.

Then we go a step further.

Students tap and say the sounds of letters because:
It builds a direct connection between the letter and its sound
It engages multiple pathways in the brain (visual, auditory, and movement)
It supports accurate decoding and spelling
It strengthens phonemic awareness

We want students to move beyond memorizing the alphabet…to actually using it to read and spell with confidence.
