As a midwife, there are many tips I can offer you to help have a shorter a faster labor. But, did you know that many birth choices can actually help you have a LONGER and SLOWER labor?!
Yes, it is true! My subscribers are often led to my CajunStork YouTube channel by searching for tips on how to have a "shorter and faster labor" not realizing the impact of their birth choices on their labor itself and how their choices may be working AGAINST what they were hoping for their birth experiences!
So here are a few tips to help you have a LONGER & SLOWER Labor! Let us know in the comments if any of these have applied to you in the past!
💉 Epidural: Yup, that's right, an epidural can SLOW your labor down, requiring Pitocin (a synthetic hormone that produces intense contractions that YOU might not be able to feel anymore but your baby certainly can!) and other interventions that are scary, unpleasant and expensive.
🙊🙈🙉Not Preparing The Right Birth Team: I know you love your Ma, your Grandma, and probably your Mother In Law, but the fact is unless they are trained or experienced in natural birth themselves they likely won't have the skills to help your birth go faster. A birth doula or a midwife (heck, consider hiring both!!) know tips that help your birth go quicker such as quiet birth etiquette, physical support skills and being able to understand and help get baby into the best birth position for a quicker and easier delivery. As a side note, I believe bringing the wrong birth team can completely derail your satisfaction with your birth by increasing anxiety, creating distractions, and a whole list of other things that you may not realize until after the fact. Who you bring to your birth should be up to you but preparing a birth team that helps you avoid a longer and more painful labor may take some preparation with a birth professional.
🏡🏥 Birthing in an Environment You Aren't Completely Comfortable In: I realize that homebirth or birth center births are not right for all of my subscribers, but one thing is for sure- If you find yourself choosing a hospital birth because you're "scared" of out-of-hospital birth- BUT, you know that you are also "scared" or INTIMIDATED IN THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT, then you are creating a situation where FEAR --> causes TENSION --> which causes MORE PAIN in your birth! Be sure to choose a birthing environment YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN. Don't take anyone's word for it- do your research!!
🛌 Laying down in your labor: If you aren't moving around, switching position, or laboring UPRIGHT with walking, squatting, ball sitting, showering or even hands and knees you can expect your labor to be longer AND more painful!
