☀️ HEY BLUE COLLAR CREW — THE HEAT IS NOT PLAYING THIS SUMMER.

If you work outside in the Louisiana heat — construction, oilfield, roofing, landscaping, farming, welding, EMS, utilities, road crews, etc. — heat exhaustion can sneak up on you FAST. And if ignored, it can turn into a life-threatening heat stroke.

Your body will usually warn you before it crashes. Don’t ignore the signs just to “push through.”

⚠️ Signs of HEAT EXHAUSTION:

* Heavy sweating
* Dizziness or lightheadedness
* Headache
* Muscle cramps
* Nausea or vomiting
* Weakness/fatigue
* Fast heartbeat
* Cool, clammy skin

🚨 Signs it may be progressing to HEAT STROKE:

THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY.

* Confusion or acting “off”
* Fainting
* Difficulty speaking
* Severe headache
* Hot, dry skin OR suddenly stopping sweating
* Trouble walking
* Seizures
* Loss of consciousness

🧊 Prevention Tips:

✔️ Drink water BEFORE you feel thirsty
✔️ Add electrolytes during long shifts
✔️ Take cooling/shade breaks often
✔️ Wear lightweight breathable clothing
✔️ Avoid energy drinks/alcohol during extreme heat
✔️ Eat regularly — your body needs fuel too
✔️ Watch your coworkers for signs they may not notice themselves

🩺 When to seek medical attention:

* Symptoms aren’t improving with rest/cooling
* Vomiting prevents hydration
* Chest pain, confusion, or fainting occur
* You stop sweating or become disoriented
* Symptoms rapidly worsen

Don’t wait until your body forces you to stop. Heat emergencies escalate QUICKLY.

Did you know!?

The best recovery plan after donating blood or plasma is a combination of hydration, electrolytes, protein, iron support, and rest — not just one thing alone.

Here’s the ideal post-donation recovery approach:

Immediately After Donation

* Drink plenty of fluids right away
Water is good, but electrolyte drinks are even better because they replace sodium and minerals lost during donation.
* Eat a snack with protein + carbs
Examples:
* turkey sandwich
* peanut butter crackers
* protein shake
* fruit + cheese
* Greek yogurt

This helps stabilize blood sugar and energy levels.

Over the Next 24 Hours

1. Rehydrate aggressively

Blood and plasma donation both reduce circulating fluid volume.

Best options:

* Water
* Electrolyte drinks
* Coconut water
* Oral rehydration solutions

IV hydration can also help some people recover faster — especially frequent donors, athletes, outdoor workers, or people who feel weak/dizzy afterward.

2. Replace protein

This is especially important after plasma donation because plasma contains proteins your body has to rebuild.

Good options:

* Chicken
* Eggs
* Fish
* Protein shakes
* Greek yogurt
* Beans

3. Support iron levels (especially after blood donation)

Whole blood donation removes iron-containing red blood cells.

Iron-rich foods:

* Red meat
* Spinach
* Lentils
* Iron-fortified cereals

Pair iron with vitamin C to improve absorption:

* oranges
* strawberries
* bell peppers

4. Avoid things that worsen dehydration

For several hours afterward, try to limit:

* Alcohol
* Excess caffeine
* Intense exercise
* Heat exposure

If You Tend to Feel Bad After Donating

Some people are more sensitive and may benefit from:

* IV fluids/electrolytes
* B vitamins
* Extra protein intake
* Rest for the remainder of the day

Signs you may need more than just water:

* Persistent dizziness
* Headache
* Fatigue
* Nausea
* Muscle cramps
* Feeling “foggy” or shaky

A simple rule:

“Hydrate, replace electrolytes, eat protein, restore iron, and rest.”
