Concussion Case
🧠
Here we are reviewing a concussion case, in which an athlete was hit in the head with a ball. Symptoms include dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, and difficulty returning to sport.
🧠
Examination revealed several areas of the visual system that needed attention. We used specific oculomotor diagnostic tests to determine if there are imbalances in the way the eyes move, process information, and react to a stimulus. Fast reaction times, having a strong sense of your position in space, balance and neuromuscular control are all absolutely critical for athletic performance. They are also necessary in functioning throughout everyday life.
🧠
Skill acquisition is dependent on our ability to take in information (visually in this case), process it, and react accordingly. The study of eye movements has become an important research tool when looking at many aspects of cognition, including memory, attention, motivation, reward, prediction, and decision making, as well as neurological and psychiatric diseases. (Leigh and Zee, 2015)
🧠
At our office, we test these systems to develop a customized neuro-visual rehabilitation program, as they are vital to the rehabilitation of concussion and brain injury.
