Have you heard of Julia Flikke? No? She was a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps and became the first woman to earn the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army.
Julia was born March 16, 1879 and passed away February 23, 1965. She joined the Army Nursing Corps during WWI, not long after losing her husband. Julia’s first deployment was with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France. From there she was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. before being assigned to the office of surgeon general with a rank of captain. She then moved up in rank to major of the Army Nurse Corps and then promoted to colonel in 1942.
