Last week our 2yr old had a stomach bug and I had no idea how to care for her! I had to learn on the fly and it did NOT go well. It was so hard because she was begging me for food shortly after vomiting, but every time I gave her anything (even water) she would vomit almost immediately. I generally advocate for trusting your child's body when it comes to food consumption, but this is not one of those times (learn from my mistakes!)

The following is not medical advice. They are just suggestions from a mom who learned through trial and error and research done at 1am in a scramble to learn about toddler stomach flu treatments πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

πŸ‘‰πŸΌRehydration protocols: 2 hours after vomiting, you can give a few mL of water in a spoon or syringe (or a homemade Pedialyte) every 10-15 min. If you're using any binders, now is the time to give it. After a few hours of this, you can move to bone broth. And a couple hours after that, you can move to easily digested, soft foods that will provide glucose for energy (banana, juice, toast, etc). Restart this protocol if your child vomits again.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌLine a large bowl with a plastic grocery bag, and place a paper towel in the bottom of the bag. Layer 4-5 bags and paper towels in the bowl. Tie up the bag for easy clean up. And then wash your hands!

πŸ‘‰πŸΌCloth diaper pail liners fit perfectly over pillows. Place a pillowcase over the pail liner. Pair it with waterproof pads (like chux pads) for the bed or couch.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌOrganic concord grape juice, shilajit, and ginger or peppermint tea can be helpful treatments. Concord grape juice is high in vitamin C, provides energy and hydration, and may alter the pH of the stomach enough to prevent further viral attack. Shilajit (or food grade bentonite clay or food grade activated charcoal) may bind to the virus and prevent further spread to the intestines πŸ’© Ginger and peppermint tea can help relieve stomach pain and nausea. *See rehydration therapy point for when to administer*

πŸ‘‰πŸΌTake it SLLLOOOOWWWW when giving food and drinks. Trust me πŸ₯΄ it will take many hours before your child's stomach will be ready for their usual diet.

Get your kids in the kitchen with you! It is fun, can help picky eaters broaden their preferences, and their little hearts radiate as they enjoy the food they made. J helped make these biscuits and even though they didn't rise very well, they were still yummy!

Today has been the perfect balance of busy and refreshing. Busy because we slept in + had a morning date with a church grandma at the local bakery. Refreshing because we all woke up well rested and we got to spend quality time with a woman we love who speaks truth, offers encouragement, and shares wisdom with me while she loves on my girls (seriously, she's the best and I am so thankful that we have several women in our church like this!)

Because we woke up late, everyone was STARVING (have you ever dealt with hungry 1&2 year olds while you're hungry? 🀯). As I rushed to get eggs cracked and toast buttered, I could feel my blood sugar dropping. I was getting intensely thirsty. And my mood was also slipping. As mothers and wives, our moods set the tone for our families... I knew I needed to act fast to get my blood sugar (and mood) stabilized. I prayed aloud for strength and balance as I made myself an adrenal cocktail. I don't have exact measurements for this recipe and there are tons of other accounts with variations to this recipe, but I'll share my favorite with you.

In a wine glass (it's a cocktail, y'all! And I rarely use these glasses for wine 🀣):
➑️ 3/4 of the glass filled with 100% pure coconut water. For hydration and minerals.
➑️ 1-2 oz organic pineapple juice
➑️ Pinch of arctic sea salt or Redmond's real salt
➑️ 1 scoop of collagen peptides (we like Great Lakes)
➑️ 1 serving of magnesium bicarbonate (brand: Mitigate Stress)

My youngest is cutting her 2 year molars and hasn't been eating much. She woke up from her nap asking for steak, and since we had some in the fridge, she got to eat a sirloin steak for afternoon snack 🀣 it's a funny request from a 22 month old, but when I look at it from a physiological standpoint it makes perfect sense. Since she hasn't been interested in consuming anything but cows milk, she needs the protein from the steak. And the physical act of chewing the steak will help the teething process. Intuitive eating for the win! I'm so proud of her (and myself πŸ˜‰) for listening to what her body needs.

Even though she's not interested in eating, I'm not stressed about it. I'll keep offering nutrient dense foods and things that may help soothe the inflammation. If I feel worry start to creep in, I'll remind myself that it's my job to offer nutritious food and her job to eat it!

Spiced cider oats for morning snack today! πŸ˜‹
For 3 serving of oats:
1.5 C water
1.5 C apple cider
1/4 tsp sea salt
1.5 tsp apple pie spice (or pumpkin pie spice)
1.5 C organic old fashioned oats
2 heaping scoops of collagen
1-2 Tbsp organic brown sugar or organic maple syrup

Bring the liquids, salt, and apple pie spice to a boil. Add the oats and collagen and cook for 10-15 minutes on medium low heat, stirring often.
Top with cream, whipped or liquid, and a sprinkle of the pie spice.
