This May, we celebrate the partnerships that make whole person care possible. When healthcare, faith communities, and neighbors work together, more people find a path to healing. A faith leader. A Sunday school teacher. A trusted elder. You may be the first person a person dealing with a mental health challenge turns to.

Mental illness is a medical condition. This month and every month, communities of faith and faith-based organizations can lead the way: learn the signs, help screen, and know where to refer: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-support/health-care-or-support

Good mental health is a component of overall health and is essential to a high quality of life for all ages. Language matters. Choosing supportive words can help people feel seen, heard, and respected. Sometimes the most important step is listening. Taking time to listen to the concerns of an individual can help them feel safe sharing what they’re experiencing.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, Mental Health America encourages everyone to reflect on what a “good day” looks like to them. “Good” doesn’t have to mean happy or productive. It can mean calm, neutral, comfortable, manageable, or something else. It can change over time. It’s different for everyone, and only you can define what a good day looks like to you.

We can all work together for more good days. Having more good days isn’t a solo mission. Check in with friends, colleagues, and loved ones to see how they’re feeling, and offer support and encouragement. Connection is protection, and you don’t have to carry the weight of “not-so-good” days alone. Even small moments of connection — whether in person or virtual — can reduce stress and anxiety, and remind us we’re not the only ones feeling what we’re feeling. Remember it doesn’t take much to be the good in someone’s day.

You cannot separate mental health from physical health. They are equally important and deeply connected. Our sleep, stress, relationships, nutrition, environment, and other health conditions all impact — and are impacted by — our mental health.
Many factors that affect our health are beyond our control. Even when we can’t change everything, noticing what we can influence is important for our well-being. Whether it’s finding ways to move that you enjoy, talking with a friend, connecting with your community, walking your dog or remembering to drink water — small wins matter.

How do you take care of your whole self?

Parents and caregivers are often the first to notice when something feels different. Changes in mood, sleep, appetite or behavior may signal a young person needs support. Young people thrive when support comes early. Encouraging open conversations about mental health can help children and teens feel supported in reaching out.
