Meet Christy Fuhrer as we proudly stand alongside her while she opens her heart and shares her story on her battle with breast cancer. We are pleased to lend our support to the upcoming Storyectomy Showcase which helps survivors get their story out!

"Spoiler Alert! Cancer SUCKS! I didn’t wake up one day hoping to get cancer, but I did, and I dealt with it just like my mom did when she had her first battle with breast cancer at the age of 44 and a relapse at the age of 61. You’re not going to hear about my mom passing away from cancer while I held her hand as she took her final breath. You won’t hear about the horrible challenges she faced those 6 & a half years on chemo as she tried to live her life to the fullest by creating happy memories with her first grandson as she dealt with a relapse. You won’t even hear about the funny times like the time she let me shave the last bits of her hair into a Mohawk. Those memories are still too fresh for me–and that was over 12 years ago! Instead you will hear about her daughter: me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31 and I chose to follow my mom’s lead by fighting the disease with determination and a sense of humor. As serious as the Big C is, my mom gave me the courage to see the absurdity of it all and actually laugh at a lot of my experiences and myself. Sure, I shed lots of tears and at times, I was really scared during my battle, but I always knew I’d be fine. I gave myself no other choice. My mom is my inspiration and I know she’ll be laughing with me up in Heaven. I’m doing Storyectomy for my mom, my hero. (Dad, you’re my “alive hero” for many reasons so don’t feel left out. ☺ ) Let’s do this, mom!"

Great news! A new recommendation in the age for screening for breast cancer has been announced by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)!

A noticeable increase in breast cancer diagnoses earlier and earlier in addition to higher mortality rates in Black women has caused change in the average age of beginning mammograms to 40 years old instead of the previously recommended 50.

Here is a post to share with your online community on important breast cancer facts to help raise awareness!

🌸 Breast Cancer affects about 1 in every 8 women
🌸 Only 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary, meaning gene changes (mutations) are passed on from a parent
🌸 Women should begin having mammograms yearly at age 40, or earlier if they're at high risk
🌸 In 2022, about 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed
🌸 At this time, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the US
