Check back soon as we share more exciting information about the development of the campus and in the meantime read about the history of the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics which was located right here on our campus during WWII.

Hawthorne School of Aeronautics was a flying school and airport located 5 miles south of Orangeburg, South Carolina. The school was closed in 1945. Currently, the land is being used for non-aviation purposes.

History of The Methodist Oaks

To fully appreciate our current mission and vision for the future, you must first look at our past. The Methodist Oaks has been fulfilling dreams.

The vision of a home for seniors came to fruition for Reverend Doctor James F.M. Hoffmeyer, our founder, and many others in 1953 when the South Carolina Methodist Conference purchased 113 acres to be called The Methodist Oaks. Within two months of purchase, the first ten residents, Dr. and Mrs. Hoffmeyer and a staff of dedicated workers moved onto the campus. Located three miles south of Orangeburg, South Carolina, the land previously served as a World War II training base for French and American Air Cadets.

Today, The Methodist Oaks, now knowns as The Oaks, is situated on 650 beautiful acres of land on the Edisto River. The commitment and foresight of our founder, friends, leaders and residents have enabled The Oaks to continue to provide the pleasures and privileges of continuing care retirement at its very best in an atmosphere of health, wellness and freedom. Our dedication to service, not only within The Oaks but to the community of Orangeburg and its surroundings, continues to guide our growth.
