In Gullah, to eat is to nyam. 🍽️

The word crossed the Atlantic from West Africa and took root in the Sea Islands — holding flavor, memory, and rhythm through generations.
Gullah families would say “Come nyam!” as an invitation — to share food, to sit together, to be nourished in body and spirit. Okra soup, shrimp perloo, pot liquor greens — all served with love, and with language that endured.

Words like nyam remind us: the Gullah language is not broken English — it’s a living bridge to African heritage, held strong through centuries of resistance.
📖 At Gullah Celebration 2026, we honor the roots of our language and the stories it carries.
