Often clients have little knowledge on the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor. They are invariably grateful for a lesson and learning about their bodies. It helps them to understand form, function and dysfunction. Here is a brief introduction to the pelvic floor...In short, the pelvic floor muscles are present at the base of your pelvis. There are several layers of multiple muscles. They differ in size, some smaller, some larger. A portion of these muscles reside more superficially, close to the surface of your perineum and another portion lies deeper inside. They attach to your pelvic bones. They serve to provide stability to your pelvic organs, and core and if you are pregnant, baby. They assist with continence and elimination. They serve in sexual function. The pelvic floor works or functions with your spinal, abdominal, hip and breathing muscles to help you function in every day activities. They are present in all genders. During a pelvic physical therapy exam, these muscles are commonly assessed (along with other core muscles) for strength, endurance, pain, tension and coordination.

Did you know that pelvic floor muscles training can be much more than just "Kegel" exercises. Balance exercises, for example, can help to "wake up" your pelvic floor muscles in a way that is fun and functional. At Lotus Physical Therapy for Women, those requiring pelvic floor training, as part of their program, receive a multitude of exercises and functional activities to build, strength, core stability and balance, helping them return to the things they love and need to do. The summer is at a close, it may be time to get back on track with self-care. Visit the website for more information.

Defying gravity while progressing through pregnancy can be a challenge for many women. Notice how far behind the lower back and pelvis the ribcage is. This draws a gravity line behind the lower back instead of through it. That often means lower back compression and pain as well as strain to the front if the hips and p***c region. The body is clever at finding compensatory strategies to deal with growing baby and gravitational pull. Sometimes not the best strategies. At Lotus Physical Therapy for Women, I help women suffering from back and pelvic pain find the best strategies, through strengthening, postural awareness, stretching and even external bracing and support to help them move through their pregnancies feeling the best they can. ***csymphysisdysfunction
