Defying gravity while progressing through pregnancy can be a challenge for many women. Notice how far behind the lower back and pelvis the ribcage is. This draws a gravity line behind the lower back instead of through it. That often means lower back compression and pain as well as strain to the front if the hips and p***c region. The body is clever at finding compensatory strategies to deal with growing baby and gravitational pull. Sometimes not the best strategies. At Lotus Physical Therapy for Women, I help women suffering from back and pelvic pain find the best strategies, through strengthening, postural awareness, stretching and even external bracing and support to help them move through their pregnancies feeling the best they can. ***csymphysisdysfunction

Interesting morning hiking in the Gunks. Lovely vistas, a beautiful, iridescent beetle and thousands of creepy, crawly caterpillars, gliding down from the trees and landing on us. Ick. You could literally hear them chomping away at all of the pink mountain laurels (as noted in the photo). They are hungry, hungry caterpillars 🐛🐛🐛

You may not know that babies move through different positions as they negotiate the bony pelvis/birth canal during delivery as shown in the images. Baby's head has to find the path of least resistance to the bony structures around it. That means turning so their head can fit through the pelvic inlet and outlet which varies in size and diameter. At Lotus Physical Therapy for Women, I help expectant moms explore movements and positions prior to delivery that help maximize pelvic, trunk and hip mobility for delivery to assist in the birthing process. Call or visit the website to set up your prenatal evaluation today. canal

Women are at greater risk for dangerous falls as they age. These are some of the reasons why... ✨️Bone loss or decreased bone density. Increased frailty and postural changes. Loss of motion. ✨️Decreased muscle mass or sarcopenia. ✨️Decreased vision and depth perception. ✨️Changes to cardiovascular system - thickening of heart tissue and decreased ability for heart to pump efficiently. ✨️Changes to and slowing of nervous system. Reactions times slower, balance decreased, decreased sensation. ✨️Changes to bladder and bowel function. Incontinence. Rushing to bathroom, search for bathroom in darkness of night, slipping on puddle from accident. ✨️Decreased hearing and vestibular changes. Decreased awareness of surroundings and dizziness. While these changes can occur in men, they are more pronounced in women. We cannot stop the body from changing but we CAN slow these processes and improve quality of life through proper nutrition, stimulating cognitive function and exercise. Exercise that challenges muscle, bone, cardiac and balance systems are recommended. Weight-bearing, resistance training, balance exercise, exercises that combine multiple muscle groups and cardiovascular exercise. KEEP MOVING to help prevent falls and serious injury.

Does it take reading War and Peace in the lavatory before passing stool? Constipation a regular occurrence (sounds like an oxymoron)? Has straining become the norm? Constipation is considered one the most common GI complaints in the US. Chronic constipation can effect up to 20% of adults in the US. Stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, certain medications and health conditions can contribute to the problem. Bloating, pressure, abdominal cramping, discomfort and even urinary frequency can be some of the symptoms. You may have guessed it, along with adequate fluid intake, appropriate diet and fiber, exercise and stress reduction, PELVIC PHYSICAL THERAPY can help. Proper breathing techniques, posture, positioning, exercises for strength, relaxation and coordination to pelvic floor and other core muscles can be of tremendous help. For more information about how physical therapy can help, visit the website www.lotusptny.com (also listed in bio). Schedule your appointment today. Locations in Orangeburg and New Paltz, New York.
