It's Thursday! In the spirit of generations of tradition, Your Crowley County Fire Departments and Crowley County Ambulance crew are scrubbing pots, sorting beans, and chopping onions for the Crowley County Days Bar-B-Que! No phone calls are needed, no reminders are necessary... we all just show up.... just like the year before.
100% of all Bar-B-Que proceeds goes to your County Fire Departments to purchase much needed equipment! We appreciate your support! We couldn't continue this tradition without our extremely generous 2025 sponsors:
Bert Buhr/Buhr Ranch
Tyler & Kashley Karney
Ordway Cattle Feeders
Padilla Produce
Crowley County American Legion
See you all Saturday after the Parade!

As we prepare to honor and remember our Soldiers who died defending our great nation tomorrow, we would like to take a moment this evening to remember those members of Crowley County Ambulance that have passed on in recent years. For those of us who served with them, we are grateful for that time. The rest of us are honored to have the opportunity to carry on their legacy.

The rest of the crew:
Ryan Akers—EMT—Ryan joined the roster as a driver and like his wife, Autumn, quickly completed the EMT basic course. And we are so glad to have him on our roster. Ryan’s common sense and his fearless “get it done” attitude make him an extremely valuable teammate. He works full time, has 4 young children at home, and he survived the last year while his wife was in Paramedic school—to call him “steady” would be an understatement! Ryan also serves on CC District 1 Volunteer Fire Department.

Julia Osage-Merrill—Driver and EMT student—Julia is fairly new to CC Ambulance roster. She is currently working her way through EMT basic training and serves on Ordway Volunteer Fire Department. She comes to us with dispatch experience which is always helpful. We are excited to see what the future holds for Julia.

Shawn Swope—Paramedic—to say Shawn works full time would be completely inaccurate. He is employed by AMR/Medtrans which he calls “his job.” He is on two volunteer rosters--Fowler Fire & Ambulance and Crowley County Ambulance. He is the lead instructor for EMT basic classes and CPR training as well as a continuing education instructor. He has two young children, and if that’s not enough, he is the Mayor of Fowler! Shawn lives and breaths everything EMS and he is always willing to share his knowledge with anyone he can at any level. He mostly helps CC Ambulance on high acuity calls such as traumas or pediatrics and our staff and his willingness to help is very reassuring to those of us with less experience.

Jeremy Harris—Driver—Jeremy has been on our roster for a couple of years. He works full time and serves on CC District 1 Volunteer Fire Department.

Maceo Bobbs—Driver—Maceo is new to the area and our newest staff member. Welcome to the CC Ambulance Crew!

Patrick Coke—Driver—Pat has been a part of CC Ambulance crew a couple of different times. He works full time at Sutherland’s. He also serves on Ordway Volunteer Fire Department.

Kelli Jo Brubaker—Advanced EMT, Secretary/Media Liaison (yes, I am the voice behind the page!)—I began my career in healthcare in 1991 when I took a job as a CNA, followed by nursing school which I completed in 1997. In 2019 I took a full-time position w/United Health Care doing Utilization Review and working from home. I was concerned about losing some of my hands on clinical skills since I was no longer doing any bedside nursing. My husband was on CC Ambulance and I knew they were in need of volunteer EMTs so I decided to take the EMT basic course as a way to keep my skills sharp and serve my community. Now I often question myself why I didn’t go into the EMS field in the first place! In an effort to hopefully continue to staff CC Ambulance crew and be able to keep our local ambulance service in Crowley County, I mainly focus on recruiting, teaching, training, and mentoring new EMTs, and all I can say is—I could not be prouder of our staff and I am humbled to be a part of such a fine group of people! I love Crowley County and I am truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support the community has for their local ambulance service.

One of the main benefits of serving on a volunteer Ambulance service is the relationships and the camaraderie that goes along with it. When people experience crisis or traumatic situations together, they form bonds like no other. Our EMS brothers and sisters become our second family. For many of us—THIS IS WHY WE DO IT!
If you are interested in being a part of our CC Ambulance family, stop by the station and talk to Mario or Art or hit me up on Facebook. Trust me, it’s more than just a job! If you’re cut out for it, it becomes a calling!

More of our amazing volunteers!

Julie Stovall—EMT B--Julie joined as a driver first and then completed EMT training in September 2023. She was our Rookie of the Year in 2023 and Provider of the Year for 2024. She works full time as a dispatcher for Rocky Ford Communications Center and serves as the high school cheer coach. Julie continues to be one of our most dedicated volunteers and she logs a high call volume every month. We appreciate and admire her dedication. Her smile and sense of humor is an added bonus!

Emma Stovall—Driver and EMT student—Emma became a driver for us when she was still a Crowley County high school senior and a Charger Cheerleader. After the first ride along, she was hooked and we have been her cheerleader ever since! She is now working to complete EMT basic training as well as working full time in the ER at AVRMC. Emma also serves on the Sugar City Volunteer Fire department.

Autumn Akers—EMT B+ and graduate Paramedic in training—Autumn started in healthcare after completing nursing school 10 years ago. She enrolled in an EMT basic class and she has not looked back! She was accepted to the Paramedic program which she has now completed and she plans to sit for National Registry Paramedic exam after completing the required 500 hours of internship. She has 4 young children at home and she is a member of CC District 1 Fire Department. So, it goes without saying…this lady is a master at multitasking! We know Autumn will be a great Paramedic and we are so proud to have her on CC Ambulance roster.

We are often asked “do volunteers get paid?” The answer is ABSOLUTELY! YES!!! We are considered volunteers because we are a volunteer service and EMS is not our primary job. But we get paid an hourly rate based on our level of training for the hours we actually spend in the ambulance. We also get paid a small hourly rate for being on call. If you are looking for a way to make some extra money, Crowley County Ambulance might be what your looking for. Hit us up if you think we might be a good fit….The benefits go far beyond a paycheck! Stay tuned…..

As we continue to celebrate National EMS week we are spotlighting three more of our volunteers.

Julie Sandoval—EMT B+--Julie joined the service in 2017. She is a full-time teacher but she finds time to help out her community when she can. When speaking about her reason for volunteering, she states “I was not home to try to help save my mom when she needed it. If I can help someone else or be available when possible maybe I can make a difference for someone else.” She has made a difference and CC Ambulance appreciates her eagerness to help.

Dara Dillon—Driver and EMT student—Dara joined CC Ambulance a few years ago. She decided it was a good fit for her and she is now enrolled in the EMT Basic program. Dara works a full time job but she still manages to find time to help us out from time to time. Crowley County Ambulance Staff wish her well as she finishes up her EMT certification. Let the fun begin when she gets to move to the back of the rig!

Jennifer Joles—EMT B+--Jen joined CC Ambulance in 2017 as a driver and then completed EMT training in 2019. She is a member of the Ordway Volunteer Fire Department as well as working full-time in Crowley County Sheriff's Department Dispatch, and she has kids in Jr. High and High School. With all of that, she still makes it a priority to find time for Crowley County Ambulance. We appreciate Jen for her dedication and her sense of humor.

As you can see, many times our EMT’s and Paramedics start out as drivers. This gives them a chance to see if EMS is truly for them without making a commitment to further training. We are always looking for volunteers to expand our roster. Is EMS for you? Do you have a heart for service? Stop by the station to chat or hit one of us up…that’s how most of us got started. You could be next!

The Crowley County Fire Departments have prepared the Bar-B-Que in the park for Crowley County Days under the direction of the Crowley County Fair Board for many years. 2024 presented a new opportunity for the Fire Departments to take over the Bar-B-Que completely independent, and in turn use any profit/revenue to purchase much needed equipment. This was a big undertaking.... we knew how to do the work, as our volunteer fire fighters and their spouses do it every year without fail. But, we needed to figure out how to pay for supplies and get the donations...so we formed a committee chaired by our County Chief Rick Ferraro and with members from all three departments as well as the ambulance crew. Soon we had a name--FIREHOUSE BAR-B-QUE!
We are proud to say our first year was a SUCCESS! Thanks to our extremely generous donors and those who came to support us, we managed to pay the bills and put some money in the bank for next year!

We could not make this happen without the genourosity of our sponsors who donate their products and services.
