There’s so much pressure to “move on” after loss — to get back to work, smile politely, and make it seem like everything is okay.

But here’s the truth: moving on isn’t the goal. Love doesn’t disappear, and neither does the bond.

You carry it forward. In the way you tell their stories. In the recipes you still make. In the music that brings them rushing back.

At Hillside, we believe that healing isn’t about erasing the past — it’s about learning how to live beside it, with softness and strength.

The firsts hit hard.

The first birthday without them. The first holiday. The first trip to their favorite restaurant where their chair sits empty.

Nobody warns you how ordinary days — back-to-school shopping, weekend errands, or an August sunset — can catch you off guard with a wave of absence.

At Hillside, we honor the emotional terrain of what comes after, and we’re here for the moments that don’t make headlines but still break your heart a little.

Not everyone wants a black suit, a solemn room, and organ music.

And that’s okay.

Today’s funerals can be as creative and personal as the people they honor — from backyard BBQs to beachside gatherings, live music, photo displays, or silent walks.

At Hillside, we work with families to co-create goodbyes that feel authentic, not obligatory.

Grief isn’t always visible.

You can be laughing on the outside and aching on the inside.

You can look “strong” and still feel shattered.

On National Grief Awareness Day, we invite you to name your grief. Speak it. Honor it. Let someone know it’s still there.

And if you don’t know what to say to someone grieving? Try this: “I’m thinking of them today--and of you.”

Some people leave behind more than belongings — they leave behind stories. The kind told around campfires, at family dinners, or passed between generations like heirlooms.

These stories are sacred. They remind us not just how someone died, but how they lived — boldly, quietly, imperfectly, beautifully.

At Hillside, when we help plan a service, we don’t just ask, “What kind of flowers?” We ask, “What kind of life?” Because we believe that telling their story well is one of the greatest ways to honor them.

When loss is sudden, everything becomes a decision: What would they want? Burial or cremation? Open casket? Memorial slideshow?

Preplanning removes that burden from your family — and replaces it with peace.

At Hillside, we walk you through every step, without pressure or overwhelm. Start the conversation now, so your loved ones don’t have to later.

You don’t need to follow a particular religion to find comfort in rituals. In fact, some of the most powerful memorials we’ve seen include poetry, music, art, or shared silence.

Ritual is how we pause. It’s how we name what mattered. It’s how we say goodbye — not with perfection, but with presence.

At Hillside, we encourage you to create rituals that feel natural and honest for your family--because healing often begins in those small, sacred moments.

Making a will isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about protecting what you’ve built — and the people you love most.

Without a will, decisions about your belongings, property, and even guardianship for your children may fall to the court system.

That means added stress, confusion, and delays during a time that’s already hard enough.

At Hillside, we encourage families to start these conversations early. Because a will isn’t just legal — it’s a deeply personal act of love and clarity.

We don’t like to imagine the “what ifs,” but here’s one worth considering: what happens to your home, your heirlooms, or your family’s future if there’s no will in place?

When someone dies without a will, the law decides what happens next — not your values, not your voice. That can lead to family conflict, unexpected costs, and painful decisions.

Creating a will is simpler than most people think, and we can help point you in the right direction.

At Hillside, we believe a will is one more way to give your loved ones peace, not pressure.

Children grieve too—but they do it differently.

They may ask the same questions again and again. They may seem fine one moment and fall apart the next. What they need is honesty, routine, and reassurance that they’re safe and loved.

At Hillside Chapel, we believe even the littlest hearts need big support. We’re here for your whole family.

When a grandchild dies, grandparents grieve twice: once for the child, and again for their own child now navigating unimaginable pain.

It’s a quiet kind of grief—often overlooked, yet just as profound. They may feel they have to be “strong” for everyone else, but their hearts are broken, too.

If you’re a grieving grandparent, you deserve support just as much.

At Hillside Chapel, we hold space for every layer of loss—and every generation that feels it.
