Early April and making splits!

These hives are so strong already that it was time to divide them. A “split” is just taking one thriving colony and turning it into two… kind of like hitting reset on growth and preventing them from swarming off.

It’s definitely early for this, but when the bees tell you they’re ready—you listen.

Strong hives this early has me feeling really optimistic for the season ahead 💛🍯🐝

From syrup to honey! Funny how nature works.

Just as maple syrup season ends with the budding of trees, the bees begin their spring work. This happens almost instantaneously.

Those same maple trees that gave us sap are now providing pollen and nectar for the bees, followed by willows and other early blooms.

First the trees give us maple syrup…
then they feed the bees that make honey. 🍁🐝🍯

I’ve had a lot of questions about beeswax lately, and with the snowy weather today, I’m planning to make some candles. But first here’s a little look at where our beeswax begins.

This little warm-up has all my beekeeping friends smiling. This is the time of year, when the weather goes above 40° on occasion, we finally start seeing bees out and about again. After long stretches of cold, they’ll take cleansing flights — because bees don’t go to the bathroom inside their hive.
I’ll admit, I got a little worried when I saw a few scattered bees in the snow. But after checking the hives and hearing that steady hum inside, I felt the same relief so many of us do this time of year.

Seeing those first signs of activity again always brings a deep breath and a grateful heart. Spring isn’t here yet… but the girls are still hanging in there. 💛

We’re having a long stretch of below-zero temperatures here in Ohio, and yes — as a beekeeper, I watch the forecast closely this time of year.
The bees are clustered tight around their queen, generating heat by vibrating their flight muscles. Even when it’s bitter cold outside, the center of the cluster stays around 85–95°F.
They survive on the honey they stored all summer — their fuel for winter.
That said… extended cold spells always bring a little worry. The longer they stay clustered, the more stores they consume and the harder they have to work to maintain heat.

Now we wait for a break in the weather.
As soon as we get a warmer day (around 45–50°), I’ll be out listening at the hives and checking on them — and I’ll share an update.

Winter in Ohio is no joke.

A lot of people have been asking what propolis actually is, so I wanted to share a little bit about it.

Propolis is something bees make to protect their hive. They collect resins from trees and plants and use it to seal cracks and help keep the hive healthy. It’s basically the bees’ natural defense system.

For generations, people have used propolis during the winter months to help support immune health and soothe scratchy throats. I combine it with raw honey and warming clove to make products I personally keep on hand all winter long.

That’s why I’m now taking orders for Creamed Propolis Honey and Propolis + Clove Throat Spray — simple, small-batch, and made with intention.

Winter Check

I’m taking advantage of the warmer temperatures to do a quick winter wellness check on the bees.

• Bees don’t hibernate, they form a tight cluster to keep the queen warm
• They generate heat by vibrating their wing muscles
• Their fuel is stored honey, not fresh nectar
• As winter progresses, the cluster slowly moves upward through the hive, consuming honey along the way

What I’ll be checking:
✔️ Hive entrances are clear for ventilation
✔️ The cluster position (without disturbing them)
✔️ Honey stores: heavy hives = happy bees
✔️ Moisture control (dampness is more dangerous than cold)
