Nurturing the Pregnant Couple Yoga and Massage. Since then, I have worked on many pregnant and postpartum women who have benefited from massage and doula services
I am a mother of two boys and two girls, and used The Curtis Method and had a wonderful births utilizing those techniques. I believe in empowering women with the knowledge of all the many options available to the pregnant mother. I believe that touch is vital to healing, and is incredibly powerful in aiding relaxation and alleviating pain and discomfort. On a physiological level, our bodies change so drastically so quickly as we go through the process of bringing a baby into this world, that it is no wonder we are met with a variety of aches and pains, and that our bodies can feel foreign to us. Our ligaments, joints, muscles and skin are all being pulled and stretched and strained, and we experience an imbalance between them all. It is important to help the body transition, and relax, and strengthen what is weak and tired so that we can relieve the pain caused from the imbalance. The right touch can be the ultimate healer, more powerful than any drug. It can be the difference between life and death.Truthfully, we cannot live without touch. No drug can substitute it. I see dramatic, real life changes in my client's quality of life every day, and they are healthier inside and out. It only makes sense to use massage during the most physically challenging and changing thing we will ever go through. Some benefits of pregnancy and labor massage include:

Helps control blood pressure
Helps relieve nausea, constipation and indigestion
Helps reduce swelling and edema and increases circulation
Increases flow of nutrients to the placenta
Relieves leg pains and cramps
Opens chest for deeper breath and supports learning deep breathing

Some benefits of postpartum massage include:

In 2010, Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Health System, published the results of her study, “Pregnancy and labor massage,” which found that “women who received massage therapy experienced significantly less pain and their labors were, on average, three hours shorter with less need for medication” (Expert Review of Obstetrics & Gynecology). Admittedly, the massage reduced anxiety, but the mechanisms behind the shortened labor time can be attributed to a couple of different causes.

One is the “gate theory,” which suggests that pressure messages, such as those from massage, travel faster than pain messages. So the former message reaches the brain first, closing the gate to the latter message.
Field’s research determined that another underlying mechanism could be an increase in vagal activity following massage therapy. The vagus nerve is the main component of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system and regulates the body’s internal organ systems.

Her findings stated, “In our previous studies, we have demonstrated that moderate-pressure massage and not light-pressure massage elicits a significant increase in vagal activity. According to a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, massage therapy increased cerebral flow in different brain regions involved in depression and stress regulation, including the amygdala and hypothalamus.

This implies that massage therapy engages hypothalamic regulation of autonomic nervous system activity, cortisol secretion, and limbic activity related with emotional regulation.

Psychological stressors that reduce vagal activity increase cortisol levels, but increased vagal activity decreases heart rate and blood pressure, as well as cortisol.”

I began my study in massage in 2008, and I fell in love. I fell in love with the art of touch. I fell in love with the human anatomy; how our muscles respond to everything we do, how we hold our emotions in our muscles, how manipulating the tissue can literally fix diseases and release so much more....

~ Have you ever heard of a Salt Bowl Ceremony? There are many benefits. It’s a great way to cleanse and protect your spirit and your life’s journey. A Salt Bowl Ceremony can also be a great way to set intentions and build connections with others, creating deep personal meaning for yourself and a small group.
During the ceremony, a large bowl of sea salt is placed in the middle of a circle of those participating. Each person contributes a special ingredient to the bowl, folding it in as you infuse the salt with prayers, desires, intentions & gratitude.
This can be anything that you want, a goal for your life, a thought about the relationships in the circle, a kind message to the group, aspiration, whatever intention you feel compelled to pour into the bowl is left in the salt. The sacred space we create together magnifies the power of our intentions.
This powerful co-creation will be shared among each of us. Our time together will begin with a grounding meditation; followed by sharing our voices in song to amplify the energy and intentions. Participants bring an offering for the bowl such as herbs, flower petals, essential oils, crystals…whatever they feel called to bring & a mason jar or similar to bring your salts home with each person.
I have had many wonderful experiences while participating in a Salt Bowl Ceremony, and I can't wait to experience this beautiful ceremony with all my doula sisters!
