February is Age related Macular Degeneration Month:

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)-Wet or Dry- is the leading cause of blindness among older Americans, Small but consistent steps can make a big difference in protecting your eyesight. From getting regular eye exams to eating more veggies and taking the right vitamins may help people keep their vision longer. Foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, like kale and carrots, can help protect against AMD. This AMD Awareness Month, add some greens to your plate and prioritize your vision!

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month:

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness in the United States. Many people are not aware they have the condition until they have significant vision loss. Initially, glaucoma affects peripheral or side vision, but it can advance to central vision loss. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to significant vision loss in both eyes, and may even lead to blindness.

According to the American Optometric Association , it most often occurs in people over age 40, although an infant (congenital) form of glaucoma also exists.
People with a family history of glaucoma, African Americans over the age of 40 and Hispanics over the age of 60 have an increased risk of developing glaucoma.

Other risk factors include thinner corneas, chronic eye inflammation and taking certain medications that can increase the pressure in the eyes.

For those at risk of developing glaucoma, it is recommended to have annual comprehensive eye exams. Early detection through regular eye exams, is the key to protecting your vision from damage caused by glaucoma.
