Do you know what will help your child with their performance anxiety and what will make it worse? (Part 9)

🛑 Don’t say: “Take a deep breath—that will help.”

o Managing activation requires a more practiced structured approach than a few breaths. And a single breath can’t erase the rush of adrenaline in the body.

✅Do say: “Can we check that thought? Is it really true? What’s a better thought to think right now?”

What not to say to your child when they’re dealing with performance anxiety:

🛑 “Just imagine the audience in their underwear”

Though meant to be humorous, this often creates more awkwardness than calm. No one has ever shared with me that this is the tool they rely on to
manage performance anxiety.

✅”Let’s visualize a fun, successful performance together.”

🙅‍♂️What NOT to say to your child before a game/competition/audition:

“I expect you to win, and if you don’t, I will be disappointed.”

The added pressure of an expected outcome is often the cause of performance anxiety. Focusing on an outcome shifts their attention away from what they have learned and prepared to share to fear of missing the expected mark.

🤸What you SHOULD say:
“What’s the positive mindset you’ve designed for this performance?”

📢 Parents, want to help your child before a performance? Here’s what NOT to say:

“Think positively!”

Why? Because positive thinking is challenging when your child’s body is in fight-or-flight mode.

Instead, try this: “What’s your favorite part of the piece you’re performing?” 🎵

This simple question helps redirect focus and builds genuine confidence! ✨

Advise NOT to give your kid when they’re experiencing performance anxiety:
🚫 “Eat a banana.”
While this myth is a placebo, not a real solution to anxiety. There’s the story of the boy who ate four bananas hoping to eliminate his anxiety and then threw up. Poor boy!

Instead say:
✅“Have you declared your preparation complete? You’ve practiced a lot. Are you ready?”

Part 3 of “What to say, what not to say” to help your child before a performance of any kind:

🚫“You have no reason to be anxious”

From your perspective, this may be true. But for them, their worries feel very real. “But what if I make a mistake? That would be embarrassing.”

✅” When would you like to practice the ten-finger relaxation exercise?”

Check out this breathing exercise here: https://youtu.be/MiYkmL0mDkg?si=up-XCaHNM7z1Go3p

Things you should and shouldn’t say to your child in a performance scenario #2:

🚫”You’ll do fine.” This can feel vague and pressure-filled, as children interpret “fine” as an expectation they must meet. If they are anxious or insecure, they are not feeling “fine,” which makes it harder for them to think they will do fine.
✅ “I wonder what you’ll learn from this audition/game/performance/test. Let’s be curious together.”
