Flourish Therapy Inc

Flourish Therapy Inc We provide affirming counseling services at a subsidized cost to those seeking therapy. Everyone is welcome.

We support LGBTQ individuals, families, and friends with vital therapy to navigate their journey to understand their sexuality, gender identity, and spirituality. Many people feel unhappy and disconnected from themselves and the people they love. LGBT/SSA issues and LDS or religious values may influence those connections. If you wonder whether you can strengthen yourself and your relationships, there are answers. New coping skills help you see yourself and your relationships differently and new brain techniques can help resolve old traumas along with current research that brings understanding. It's not too late to look at your life differently and change what's happening in your world. Whether you feel hopelessness, have problems with peers or parents, in a stuck relationship with yourself or others, find it difficult to understand or relate to teenagers, experience extended family issues that keep you from enjoying people you love, are carrying past trauma that continues to intrude and cause distress, or addressing LGBTQ issues, Flourish Counseling Services is for you. Our donors & volunteers make it possible for us to offer subsidized therapy. Flourish no longer will be operating out of the Encircle Center in Provo, and will be at a new location in the next month or so.

Trauma Says / Healing Says:

Trauma says: “Everything is falling apart, so what’s the point?”
Healing says: “Small, grounded actions still matter.”

When the world feels heavy (politically, socially, personally) it can feel pointless to keep showing up. Trauma zooms us out so far that nothing feels meaningful. But healing brings us back to the small, steady things that keep us connected to life.

Small actions are not insignificant. They are stabilizing. They are resistance. They are how we care for ourselves and each other when we can’t fix everything at once.

Try these grounding skills:
• A sip of water
• Checking in on a friend
• Taking a break from the news
• Moving your body for two minutes
• Choosing kindness; toward yourself included

You don’t have to save the world today. You just have to stay in it. And that matters more than you think.

There are nearly 100 Flourish Therapists and we are all rarely all together. Once a year we are reminded (by being in the same room for our annual holiday party) how grateful we are that Flourish exists. What a humbling experience to share space with so many loving and compassionate individuals who care so deeply about the most marginalized in our community. We all agree that it is a honor and privilege to work at Flourish Therapy. We might be biased, but we have some of the best therapists in the state (and surrounding states) who view this work as, sacred work. It’s an inspiration. We are the healers of our community and we will do whatever it takes to continue providing ethical, evidence-based, gender affirming, affordable, and compassionate mental health care to our clients and community in need.

Thank you to our loving team who makes up our Flourish Family. We each play an instrumental role in making this organization FLOURISH. 💜 You know an organization, especially a non-profit, is doing life saving work when the employees that work for that organization love their jobs. And we all agree that we wouldn’t want to work for anyone else. So thank you community, for continually donating so that we can continue to hold space for folx who couldn’t otherwise afford therapy services.

If the news feels heavy, personal, or overwhelming to you just know you’re not broken; probably highly empathetic.
Many of us live in bodies that have learned to stay alert to threat. This post is an invitation to stay informed and stay with yourself. Your nervous system deserves gentleness, too. 💜

Hi folx please give a warm welcome to, Zoe (she/her) who is one of our Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) student intern currently attending Utah Valley University. She is dedicated to providing inclusive, affirming care and fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship where clients can navigate identity, life transitions, relationships, and other unique stressors they may be experiencing.

In a social climate where LGBTQ+ individuals often face stigma and discrimination, Zoe strives to offer a safe, compassionate space for clients to process their lived experiences and explore mental health concerns without fear of judgment.

Zoe works from a person-centered perspective, grounded in the belief that each individual holds the capacity for inner healing and growth. She integrates elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address distressing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support clients in clarifying their values and moving toward meaningful life goals.

She has experience working with individuals experiencing OCD and anxiety and is mindful of the stigma and misinformation that often surround these concerns. Zoe is especially passionate about supporting clients who feel stuck in cycles of uncertainty, helping them confront fears in a supportive environment while building resilience and skills for lasting well-being.

The world feels especially hostile and activating, so this is a grounding reminder that our values still matter, and that love remains a powerful, protective force for our communities.

Trauma Says / Healing Says

Trauma says: “I should’ve known better.”
Healing says: “I did what I had to do to survive.”

Survivors often carry the heavy weight of hindsight. We tend to replay moments in our minds, thinking we could’ve done something differently, but what looks “obvious” now wasn’t clear then. You were navigating uncertainty, chaos, and fear. You were doing your best with the tools, knowledge, and support you had at the time. Survival doesn’t look neat or perfect. It looks messy. It looks human. And that deserves compassion, not shame.

This new year, let’s start with gentle self-reminders: the past doesn’t define your worth, and every step you took to protect yourself was valid. Healing isn’t about “fixing” yourself, it’s about noticing, honoring, and supporting the resilient parts of you that kept going, even when it was hard.

At Flourish Therapy, standing with and protecting the most marginalized communities is core to how we practice, how we advocate, and how we show up; inside and outside the therapy room. We believe mental health care must be rooted in safety, dignity, and liberation. That means naming harm, refusing neutrality, and continuing to care even when it’s uncomfortable or costly. Our commitment is to trans and q***r folks, BIPOC communities, disabled folks, immigrants, and everyone whose humanity is too often debated instead of defended.

Naming what’s happening is not the same as giving up hope. It’s how we protect ourselves, each other, and the futures we’re building together. Our community has always known how to survive, organize, love, and imagine something better. That wisdom is still here.

We’re honored to walk alongside you; in care, in action, and in solidarity.

Hi folx, we are back with introducing our clinical team on Wednesday’s!

Meet our therapist Lisa Hansen (she/her). Lisa Tensmeyer Hansen is the clinical director and founder of Flourish Therapy, Inc., (Flourish), a behavioral health clinic located in Provo, Utah, which she founded in February 2017 to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ and SSA individuals and their families. Lisa received a B.S. from Brigham Young University in 1990 as university valedictorian (Summa Cum Laude with Honors thesis), an M.S. in 2012 and Ph.D. in 2017, both at BYU, focusing on improving the mental health of LGBTQ+ people in conservative family and community.

Since 2010 Lisa Hansen has seen clients at the BYU Comprehensive Clinic, the Provo Center for Couples and Families (PCCF), and at Flourish. In 2016, she was invited to be a continuing participant in the Reconciliation and Growth Project, a dialogue group of conservative and liberal therapists and academics forging ideas to bridge divides and educate in various forums in the LGBTQ+/SSA therapeutic community. In 2018, Dr. Hansen won the Outstanding Counseling Supervisor of the Year award from the University of Utah and in 2019, she was awarded Ally of the Year award from the LGBTQ+ organization, Affirmation International.

Lisa Hansen’s interest in the well-being of LGBTQ+ and SSA people is informed by her LDS faith. She was recently released as a member of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, and she and her husband are the composers of the Primary Children’s song, Nephi’s Courage.

Dr. Hansen has given more than 100 community presentations, articles, and podcasts for universities, clinical mental health organizations, community mental health agencies, school districts and conferences. She lives with her husband in Payson, Utah, where together they made a home for 7 children (and a few extras) and now have 18 grandchildren.
