Cottagers, we are unfortunately not going to make it to the event today. The wind and anticipated rain are not looking good for outdoor canopy tents with little bags of loose-leaf tea. 🥲 Please continue to support the local vendors and attend, maybe even try a new tea from Amber Roots Holistic Wellness, grab a NA beverage from Radicle Effect Brewerks and take home a fellow plant friend!! As always, please reach out if you need anything and enjoy the free local delivery with The Herbalist Cottage Apothecary 🍃💜

🌿 Deep Dive: Protecting the Memory Center (Holy Basil vs. Alzheimer's) 🔬

We always make sure to grow plenty of Holy Basil (Tulsi) in the homestead garden for a calming cup of evening tea, relying on its centuries-old reputation as an Ayurvedic brain tonic. But as we comb through the clinical research for the Grow, Gather, Heal series, we are finding that this ancient herb is showing incredible potential in modern science for protecting our brains from severe cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

🧠 Guarding the Memory Center
Alzheimer's disease heavily targets the hippocampus, the specific part of the brain responsible for storing our personal, autobiographical memories.
🔹 The Mechanism: Studies show that an ethanolic extract of Holy Basil can significantly increase and protect the density of neurons in this critical area, effectively helping to lock in and retain those precious memories.

🛑 Stopping Brain Cell Death
Exposure to harmful toxins and neurodegenerative conditions causes brain cells to deteriorate and die off (a biological process called apoptosis).
🔹 The Mechanism: Holy Basil acts as a heavy-duty neuroprotector. It successfully inhibits this cell death and prevents nuclear fragmentation.
In Plain English: It acts like a cellular glue, stopping the brain cells from shattering and falling apart under severe neurotoxic stress.

✨ Sparking New Brain Cells (NPY)
This is the most fascinating part of the science. Holy Basil actually stimulates the brain's expression of a crucial molecule called Neuropeptide Y (NPY).
🔹 The Mechanism: NPY is absolutely vital for cognitive health. It helps reduce harmful inflammation and acts as a potent trigger for neurogenesis—the actual creation and growth of brand-new, healthy brain cells!

🌱 Clinical Insight & Apothecary Tip:
As the search for safe and effective Alzheimer's treatments continues, this research highlights that a simple ethanolic extract (tincture) of Holy Basil acts as a highly promising therapeutic alternative to preserve cognitive function. Nature's pharmacy is growing right in the dirt!

April is National Native Plant Month. 🌿

Native plants are the foundation of healthy ecosystems. 🌎 They support pollinators and wildlife, strengthen local landscapes, and help communities adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Across the country, Wild Ones chapters and members are working to restore native plants in yards, parks, schools, and public spaces. Every garden, habitat, and planting helps rebuild the ecological connections our landscapes need.

This month, join us in celebrating native plants and the people helping them return to our communities. Learn more about National Native Plant Month: https://nationalnativeplantmonth.org/
