Three months ago at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Stewart Andrews, age 62, received a genetically edited pig kidney. After years of dialysis, the surgery gave him a chance to live without the exhausting routine of treatments.
Today, Andrews is back at work and even returned to his old dialysis clinic to give others hope. Doctors made early adjustments to his medications, but he continues to do well. “If this helps in any small way, it will be worth it for me,” he says.
Now the FDA has approved large clinical trials to expand this breakthrough. Companies such as eGenesis and United Therapeutics will transplant gene-edited pig kidneys into patients on dialysis who are waiting for a human organ. With over 100,000 Americans on the transplant list, most needing a kidney, even one year off dialysis would be considered a major advance.
Andrews’ journey shows how close science is to changing the future of kidney transplantation.

Connect with the young children in your care. Tell playful stories, make funny faces, sing silly songs. Take time to laugh.

For example, change up familiar songs. Tell the children the bus is now magical and anything can be on the bus. Ask them for ideas, sounds and hand motions. “The _____ on the bus goes _____…” The monster? The chicken? The baloney sandwich? Get silly and have fun! I dare you not to laugh, together! 💖

Marybeth and The Fearless Fork

I am a Plant-Fed Dietitian and Certified Health and Wellness Coach. I started The Fearless Fork in order to promote lifestyle behaviors through coaching and provide nutrition counseling as a dietitian and not work for someone else doing this. I switched to a plant-fed diet this past year and finally feel in total congruence as a human being, a nutritionist and a health advocate for our planet and our animals. I was able to be certified through e-Cornell’s Plant Based Nutrition Course which cemented by commitment to eating this way. Because of the fullness and satiety of eating more plant-based whole foods, tracking and counting anything related to food is non-existent and this also is in line with my commitment to Health at Any Size and a non-diet approach to eating. Success will never be about the bathroom scale in my world.

I work part time in a dialysis center and have embraced my renal dietitian training. I have learned that for the 32 million Americans who have some form of chronic kidney disease will benefit from moving towards a plant-based diet as it is more alkaline and boasts such nutrient density. I have learned much about improved sports performance eating this way also with shorter recovery times in training.

I am excited to be able to offer services and redesign myself again in this area. We are all works in progress.
